CLASS TITLE: FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT - 2.5 hours/day

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of duties related to food preparation and food service; may prepare food for transport to other school facilities; maintain food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition; perform cashiering duties as needed.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist in the preparation, cooking, and/or serving of a wide variety of food items including meats, main dishes, baked goods and sandwiches.

Package foods as necessary according to established procedures, maintaining health and sanitary regulations.

Wash, slice and prepare fruits and vegetables; grate cheese; slice meat; prepare fruit cups.

Set up serving areas and steam tables; serve food to students, teachers, and other personnel; stock food carts and condiment trays.

Count trays, milk and other food items as assigned.

Maintain work areas in a clean and sanitary condition; wash, clean and sanitize tables; clean and store kitchen utensils and equipment.

Perform cashiering duties as needed; input sales into an assigned database.

Maintain daily records of foods prepared and sold and count items remaining; submit records according to established procedures.

Store unused food items according to appropriate standards to assure health and sanitation standards are followed.

Operate a variety of standard kitchen equipment including food mixers, slicer, chopper, warmers, ovens and hot and cold carts.

Perform other duties as assigned related to job description.

Sanitation and safety practices related to cooking and serving food.
Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements.
Methods of preparing and serving food in large quantities.
Record-keeping techniques.
Basic food preparation including washing, cutting and assembling food and ingredients.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Health and safety regulations pertaining to food service.

Perform a variety of duties related to food preparation and food service.
Maintain food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition.
Collect money and make change quickly and accurately.

Operate a variety of kitchen appliances.
Follow sanitary and safety standards required in food handling.
Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds using safe and proper methods and/or equipment.
Move objects weighing over 50 pounds using safe and proper methods and/or equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or high school equivalency.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Kitchen and cafeteria environment; subject to standing or walking for long periods; heat from ovens; lifting, bending and standing.
