TxDOT's Brownwood District is searching for a General Transportation Tech I or II based in Breckenridge, TX
. This position performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees. Salary Plan Grade:

General Transportation Tech I: $37,200- $49,134 /YEARLY

General Transportation Tech II: $40,800-$52,045 /YEARLY

Position Description


General Transportation Tech I:
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.



General Transportation Tech II: Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on
equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities.
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:
General Transportation Tech I:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II (in addition to the above):

  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Tech I: No experience or education required.



General Transportation Tech II: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related work experience.
(experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)

Licenses and Certifications:
General Transportation Tech I:
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.


General Transportation Tech II:
  • Valid Class "A" Commercial driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Commercial Driver’s License

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade

General Transportation Tech II (in addition to the above):

  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
  • Conducting traffic studies, surveys and estimates
  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals
  • Using surveying tools, equipment and instruments

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
