By joining our Department of Highways, District 7, Project Delivery & Preservation Branch I, Lexington Section, Fayette County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant II in Fayette County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform basic-level work and assist with intermediate-level work in the roadway or roadside maintenance operations while learning to operate intermediate-level equipment.

Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant II position will complete tasks such as:
  • Repair roadways.
  • Operate basic road repair equipment.
  • Drive a truck hauling material to and from job sites.
  • Operate a dump truck with a snowplow and salt spreader working snow and ice
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Gain knowledge and experience as a quality assurance inspector for single activities of road maintenance work.
  • Learns guardrail installation for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Learns to operate intermediate equipment such as backhoes, concrete mixers, etc.
  • Learn to flag for traffic control.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • Road and bridge maintenance or construction experience
  • Experience in the use of heavy construction equipment
  • Experience being on-call

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification.. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
