Homewood Children’s Village (HCV) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Homewood’s children while simultaneously reweaving the fabric of the community in which they live. Through collaboration, engagement, advocacy, and research, we offer a continuum of direct services and learning support for children and their families, from cradle to career, working diligently to address the complex challenges facing Homewood’s youth. HCV AmeriCorps Members contribute to this mission by providing academic support to K-5 students during the school day and connecting them with engaging activities after school. The presence of HCV AmeriCorps Members within schools, out-of-school-time programs, and in the community helps provide positive social reinforcement for students, further empowering them to learn effectively, act resourcefully, and tread confidently through life’s journeys. Service Term August 23, 2023 – July 1, 2024 Benefits A pre-tax monthly living allowance of up to $2,000 (paid bi-weekly throughout the service term) A $4,826.50 SEGAL Education Award paid upon program completion Eligibility for forbearance on student loans that are federally backed, in the member’s name, and not in default All or a portion of the interest on student loans placed in forbearance that accrued during the term of service is paid by the program if the member successfully completes the term of service. 24/7 access to the AmeriCorps Member Assistance Program (MAP)
Member Duties : During the program year, members will serve an average of 35 hours per week at a community school, where they will: (1) tutor students in math and reading, (2) model positive behavior and promote self-determination, and (3) connect students to enriching out-of-school opportunities. Additionally, members will collaborate with school staff, local partners, and fellow members to design and implement a service project that addresses a need and or/ leverages resources within the Homewood community. HCV AmeriCorps members will learn the day-to-day operations of primary education environments, expand their professional networks, and receive professional development training from active community leaders and subject matter experts.
