JOB SUMMARY: This position has overall responsibilities for coordinating the implementation of plant safety/health programs and plant environmental compliance programs in support of corporate-wide guidelines, standards, and applicable regulations; providing on-site leadership, guidance and assistance to plant staff in achieving superior safety/health and environmental performance; and working closely with other team members for data collection for monthly environmental compliance requirements. They understand and align business operations and the Department as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.


JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Provide safety/health and environmental expertise to plant staff, including consulting with and providing guidance to the Operations Manager.
  • Implement safety and health programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local safety & health standards and in support of Graphic Packaging Corporation’s (GPC) safety and health guidelines and minimum safety and health guidelines.
  • Reviews all safety manual sections annually for compliance with current OR-OSHA regulations.
  • Implement environmental programs to assure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and in support of Graphic Packaging Corporation’s (GPC) environmental guidelines including but not limited to air permitting, hazardous and non-hazardous wastes collection and disposal, NPDES and storm water management.
  • Implement and track employee safety/health training and plant environmental training in support of written programs.
  • Perform periodic safety and environmental audits. Develop recommendations for improvement.
  • Track, analyze, and communicate plant safety statistics and plant environmental reporting and statistics including but not limited to hazardous waste generator status, Title V air emissions, SARA 312 and 313 usage and reporting requirements, etc.
  • Coordinate GPC involvement with OSHA and regulatory inspections.
  • Organize workload so that applicable regulatory guidelines are met.
  • Continue to increase professional environmental knowledge through reading, training, conference attendance, etc. Develop a network of key environmental contacts in regulatory agencies, trade organizations and consulting firms.
  • Provide support for incident investigations and return to work program.
  • Be trained and certified in SQF and HACCP as back up for Lead SQF Practitioner.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant, hands on HSE experience.
  • Manufacturing experience required.
  • Experience operating hand jacks, electric pallet jacks and forklifts and clamp trucks preferred.
  • Ability to motivate people to perform at high levels.

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in safety/environmental science or related field and/or equivalent experience in a converting facility is preferred.
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Experience (3-5 years) in coordinating and developing safety/health and environmental programs.
  • Experience (3-5 years) in industrial safety, health protection, environmental protections and regulatory compliance.

SKILLS:

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.

  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • REASONING ABILITY - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • COMPUTER/OFFICE EQUIPMENT SKILLS - SAP, MS Office and database programs; Requires use of all general office equipment (i.e. fax, copier, telephone, etc.).

  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Company issued Fork Truck Operator’s License; Company issued Clamp Truck Operator’s License.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.
  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend frequently (34-66% of the time)
  • Ability to squat, climb, reach above shoulder (up to 26”), reach at waist or lower, push (up to force of 15 lbs), pull, carry, kneel, grasp (up to force of 20 lbs.), sitting and fingering occasionally (1-33% of the time)
  • Lifting up to 45 lbs. occasionally
  • Right and left hand coordination is necessary
  • Ability to read, write, hear, see, speak and have agility
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices
  • Required to make independent decisions, apply reasoning and discern color
  • Use of various hand and electrical tools and equipment
  • Work in areas of fluctuating temperature and loud noises
  • PPE required: Steel-toed/safety footwear, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Cut resistant Safety Gloves, Hair Net, Beard Net
