Position Duties

BASIC FUNCTION:

West Hills College Coalinga’s career and technical education learning area is seeking a full-time (one year temporary) faculty position in child development. The child development discipline offers a full range of child development courses to meet a variety of student needs. Courses are designed to satisfy the certificate, associate degree, transfer level requirements, and employment readiness for students.

The successful candidate must be dedicated to serving students with diverse backgrounds, learning styles and abilities. Additional responsibilities include involvement in instructional and departmental activities such as, student recruitment, advising, developing new and updating existing curriculum based on student need and industry/workforce standards including regulatory or accreditation requirements, developing and accessing learning outcomes consistent with the needs of the diverse backgrounds and abilities of students.

Teaching assignments will include a mixture of day, evening, and/or weekend courses plus face to face, online, hybrid classes. Teaching assignments will include teaching courses at the West Hills College Coalinga, Firebaugh Center and/ or other off campus sites. Teaching at offsite locations may include correctional institutions as part of the Rising Scholars Program, high schools as part of the Dual Enrollment/Early College Program, and/or other community locations.

Additional responsibilities include involvement in instructional area activities, advising, developing and review curriculum consistent with the needs of diverse backgrounds and abilities of our students, and work with other faculty on interdisciplinary issues. The candidate should be able to incorporate current technology and pedagogy including using instructional technology in the classroom and various distance learning strategies in their teaching.

Qualification

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


  • Instruct and evaluate students effectively in the college classroom.
  • Instruct a full load of courses in child development and related areas.
  • Teach courses consistent with the official course outline of record.
  • Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, as well as informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
  • Implement contemporary teaching methods and technologies; incorporate the use of technology in performing instructional and non-instructional duties including distance education technology, online course delivery, videoconference course delivery, computerized and multi-media presentation, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Work with other faculty to design, implement and assess Student Learning Outcomes at the course, program, and General Education levels in an effort to improve the quality of educational delivery and ensure student success.
  • Advise and assist students.
  • Plan, develop, and articulate courses within the instructional area. Coordinate instruction with other faculty.
  • Participate in curriculum design and evaluation, program review and other departmental activities including accreditation.
  • Assume supplementary faculty responsibilities such as participation in faculty, department and college committees, hold regular office hours, assist in budget preparation, participate in staff development activities, and perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Commit to extracurricular activities as assigned (e.g., student club advisor, student newspaper, coaching, etc.)
  • Commit to professional excellence by remaining current in the subject matter and techniques of effective instruction through participation in professional development programs in areas such as multimedia in the classroom, learning communities, school-to-work initiatives and other new technologies that may affect the teaching discipline.
  • Instruct community college lecture to a diverse student population.
  • Incorporate the use of technology in performing instructional and non-instructional duties including distance education technologies, on-line class delivery, computerized presentations, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Requires proficiency in enterprise education platforms and customer relationship management system(s) for higher education, proficiency with software programs and ability to transfer files, import data, and use presentation software.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development through memberships in regional, state, and national organizations or other activities appropriate to the discipline or assignment.
  • Ability and willingness to teach a wide range of classes as schedule and situation require including travel to the district’s various sites.
  • Knowledge of the use of technology in performing instructional and non-instructional duties, including distance education technology, online course delivery, computerized presentations, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Successful teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socio- economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students.
  • Bilingual preferred (but not required).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio- economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background of community college students.

Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education.
OR
Bachelor’s in any of the above
AND
Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/ home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies.
OR the equivalent

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Requires a valid driver's license.
