Junior GIS Technician

MJ is seeking a junior GIS technician to join our geospatial group in our Clifton Park, NY office. The geospatial group specializes in all aspects of mapping civil infrastructure for municipal and private clients; particularly utilizing LiDAR datasets collected by MJ’s survey group.

Responsibilities

- Complete GIS and LiDAR mapping projects focused on civil infrastructure and utility networks that produce PDF map series, geodatabase, web map, or CAD deliverables depending on project requirements. Complete small projects independently and work collaboratively with other technicians on large projects.

- Utilize web maps in ArcGIS Online for data collection and coordination.

- Read and understand survey maps and engineering plans.

- Accurately follow geodatabase schemas and project requirements.

- Work under the guidance of senior technicians to build geospatial skills such as geodatabase design, LiDAR extraction and mapping, Python scripting, and web map development.

Qualifications

The candidate should meet the following education and work experience requirements:

- A degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Computer Aided Drafting, or related field

- Demonstrated technical ability with GIS or CAD software from prior coursework, internship, or professional work experience

- Must be a US Citizen or be able to work without employer sponsorship

The candidate should possess the following technical knowledge and traits:

- Experience with a technical mapping software such as ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD, or MicroStation

- Organized and detail-oriented

- Able to learn new topics independently and complete tasks in a timely manner

- An effective troubleshooter and analytical problem solver

- An excellent communicator

The preferred candidate may have the following:

- Prior professional work experience in a similar role

- GIS web mapping experience

- LiDAR or 3D modeling experience

Pay is based on applicant’s ability and will be rated accordingly.
