Job Description:

As the Science Lab Assistant, you are the laboratory staff member responsible for preparing and setting science labs on the Middletown Campus and assisting faculty at the lab as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assisting in laboratory set-ups for biology, chemistry, microbiology, anatomy & physiology and environmental science classes.
  • Storing equipment, models and supplies properly.
  • Keeping labs clean and organized.

The compensation for the position will commensurate with education and experience; however, the starting minimum hourly rate for this position is $17.81. The position is part time and as such cannot exceed 29 hours per week and is not eligible for health or leave benefits. However, the position may offer educational benefits through our professional development and educational assistance policies.

Telework
According to DHRM policy 1.61 Teleworking, effective July 5, 2022, Virginia state employees will return to the workplace. Consistent with pre-pandemic policies, telework may be an option for certain eligible positions. Eligible positions are determined by the type of work and job requirements of the position, as defined by heads of agencies. Positions requiring more than two days of telework weekly will require approval from the Department of Education’s Cabinet Secretary. Positions requiring more than two days of telework weekly require approval from the Office of the Governor’s Chief of Staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to make chemical solutions and dilutions, and use/maintain common lab equipment and supplies in a laboratory (such as centrifuges, balances, micropipettes, microscopes, etc.).
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to work independently in a lab setting.
  • Knowledge and adherence to lab safety protocols.
  • Knowledge in chemical safety and hazardous waste storage and disposal.
  • Strong Organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Windows applications, Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, and Power Point), email applications, and online platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in science (biology, chemistry or related field of science); or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, such as science majors/undergraduate students with the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed for this position.
