Job Purpose & Position Overview

The position serves as the Supervising Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist in the clinical laboratory at the Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System-12 Clans Unity Hospital. The Supervising Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for planning and carrying out a diagnostic testing program providing microbiology, immuno-hematology, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, molecular diagnostics, and serology in accordance with accreditation standards. May be required to be on call back or on call.


Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates the WCHS core Mission, Vision and Values
  • In conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer, determines and plans the type and extent of services to be provided. Reports to the Chief Medical Officer.
  • Establishes systems and procedures for test performance and quality assurance which optimize the level of use of in-house and reference laboratory resources
  • Evaluates and selects reagents and supplies, establishes and maintains inventory control systems
  • Establishes and implements specimen collection and preparation procedures and provides education to nursing staff in the proper methods of specimen collection and transport
  • Performs/monitors routine and specialized tests. Reports test results and consults with physicians on- additional tests that may be useful or necessary to clarify problems; evaluates referred testing
  • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products by designing and implementing instruments, reagents, and product check systems
  • Establishes a preventive maintenance program for all instruments. Calibrates or standardizes equipment, troubleshoots malfunctions, and makes simple repairs or identifies need for external services
  • Prepares and maintains current procedures and quality control manuals and forms, reviewing and revising as needed to comply with regulatory agency and laboratory needs


  • Prepares reports and responds to requests for information from hospital staff, medical staff and regulatory agencies
  • Researches, tests, and implements new procedures and equipment
  • Develops, implements, and monitors the laboratory’s performance improvement program. Ensures it is compliant with CMS, CLIA regulations, and COLA standards.
  • Promotes and maintains progressive involvement in QA/PI ensuring optimal service
  • Assesses the need for contracts. Implements and monitors contracts for laboratory services
  • Ensures that policies and procedures as well as safety practices are effectively followed and meeting all accreditation standards. Participates in the hospital infection control program
  • Will be required to supervise MLT/MLS staff; trains laboratory staff and others in techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work and Quality Control
  • Participates in providing health instruction to clinic patients, family members, and community groups on an as required basis
  • Will work in collaboration with a Consulting Pathologist (Laboratory Medical Director) to obtain and/or maintain laboratory accreditation in accordance with CMS, CLIA and COLA standards
  • Maintains liaison with other hospital departments to obtain necessary support of laboratory activities and represents the laboratory
  • Collaborates with the inter and intra departmental supervisors and health providers to develop and implement quality services and standards to increase customer services utilizing financial management, utilization management, and risk management
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Medical Technology/Laboratory Sciences with 2+ years of experience as a supervisor in a high complexity lab; a minimum of 5 years of experience as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist or a combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agencies such as state, CMS, CLIA, COLA,TJC, CAP, AABB, CDC, OSHA, CLSI
  • Ability to apply a high degree of judgement to consult with the medical staff in the correlation of laboratory results with clinical diagnosis and treatment


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the lab staff to include scheduling, training, development and more
  • Ensures compliance with laboratory accreditation standards; maintains and/or acquires laboratory accreditation.
  • Manage and maintain departmental budget

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.
  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.

Language Requirements:

  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.

Certificates, Licenses & Registrations:

  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
  • Must be ASCP or AMT certified.
