The estimated pay range for the position is as listed. Should the level of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable pay range may be updated accordingly. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Yeast Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the yeast laboratory staff and day-to-day activities of the laboratory, ensuring all SOPs and company policies are followed. This is a hands-on role that also collaborates with the Head of Operations, Yeast Bank Specialist, Production Supervisor and brewing team.

Essential Functions and Duties

Yeast Lab:

  • Performs aseptic QC sampling of yeast & wild yeast/bacteria propagations at various stages throughout the production cycle.
  • Performs and oversees qPCR assay on yeast cultures.
  • Assists with the preparation of daily working plates, 10ml cultures and flasks.
  • Performs assays for appropriate continuous improvement projects.
  • Manages the yeast bank freezes.
  • Maintains yeast laboratory cleanliness.
  • Organizes and maintains all QC records to ensure compliance with company policies and accessibility.
  • Communicates all quality-related issues or concerns to appropriate parties.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.

Supervisory Role:

  • At least 25% of the time is spent on duties related to planning and scheduling work, assigning work to employees; accepting, amending or rejecting completed work; assuring quality requirements are met; interviewing candidates; addressing employee performance.
  • Supervises yeast laboratory staff and schedules staff to meet department needs.
  • Partners with Plant Manager and Head of Operations to establish performance/productivity goals for the department.
  • Ensures daily operational goals are achieved and all required tasks are completed.
  • Manages performance of the team, as well as individuals, and addresses concerns as needed.
  • Reviews employee timecards, time off requests, and makes required adjustments to ensure coverage.
  • Attends daily meetings and communicates department changes, updates and roadblocks.
  • Partners with Plant Manager and Head of Operations to implement process changes.
  • Partners with Quality Assurance Specialist to write and update department SOPs as required.
  • Develops training plans and ensures staff members are up to date on proper yeast culturing and QC techniques/procedures.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or science-related field required.
  • 2+ years of laboratory experience, preferably in a brewing or food production environment.
  • 1+ year of supervisory experience required.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) or Google Workspace required.
  • Ability to analyze data and arrive at tangible solutions based on available information.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt through changes.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to organize work and documents effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Demands

While employee may have a workstation, time spent conducting sedentary work is approximately 50%, with the other 50% of time spent walking, standing and/or driving. May be required to lift 30 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
