Very responsible supervisory and technical work involving the application of professional architectural skill and knowledge to difficult landscaping projects essential to the development of public grounds, municipal parks, recreational facilities, and other related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of Work

This is difficult landscape work of a professional architectural nature in connection with the improvement of public grounds and municipal parks; incumbent may also confer with developments of major commercial and residential properties to ensure environmental harmony with public grounds. Work of this class involves the responsibility for creation of complex design and models for planting and land use projects, and for planning, assigning and overseeing the work of subordinate professional and technical personnel.

Employee receives general supervision and policy guidance, but works with a considerable degree of independence and is expected personally to conduct, review and analyze the more difficult studies or projects.

Examples of Work

  • Confers with local authorities, civic leaders, social scientists, land planning and development specialists to devises and recommend arrangement of land and physical facilities for municipal, and, occasionally, commercial and residential uses.
  • Prepares formats, maps, sketches and layouts on such site conditions as geographic location, soil, vegetation and rock features, drainage and location of structures.
  • Develops plans for landscape development work including grading, filling sloping, surface dressing, seeding and planting.
  • Prepares specifications and cost estimates for land development of existing and proposed land features and structures.
  • Inspects construction work in progress to ensure compliance with landscape specifications, approve quality of materials and work, and to advise local officials and commercial interest on landscape features.
  • Represents agency at public hearings and community meeting to explain projects and gather information and recommendations from interested individuals and civic groups.
  • Conducts research projects and studies as required for the purpose of effecting increased efficiency and economy.

Necessary Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture.
  • Extensive knowledge of local plant material.
  • Ability to plan for landscaping improvements and to make cost estimates.
  • Ability to work independently in conducting surveys, compiling data and preparing comprehensive reports on landscaping techniques, and architectural matters.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general pubic and other public agencies.
  • Skill and originally in the design of landscaping models.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Landscape Architecture.*

A current license to practice landscape architecture issued by the Louisiana Horticulture Commission.*

* Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education and license claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.

This is a non-competitive original entrance examination in accordance with Rule V, Section 8.1 (b) of the City Civil Service Rules.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $53,750.00 - $62,390.00 per year
