The Brotman Baty Institute (BBI) for Precision Medicine was co-founded by collaborative agreement between the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. BBI’s mission is to take advantage of Seattle’s unique ecosystem and collaborative culture towards having a transformative impact on biomedical research and patient outcomes with precision medicine. BBI works at the intersection of technology development and medicine in areas including medical genetics, cancer biology, infectious disease and technology development.
Position Summary:
We have an outstanding opportunity for a Lead, Bioinformatics and Special Projects (payroll title: Research Scientist/Engineer 4) to lead analyses related to a variety of BBI research areas, including single cell sequencing, cell-free DNA, and saturation genome editing. The position will play an important role in the development and maintenance of research-related analysis pipelines, the design and execution of clinical validation studies, and other Institute genomics projects.
The Lead, Bioinformatics and Special Projects will support and advance the Institute’s genomics initiatives in several ways. First, the Scientist will develop, improve, and standardize the computational platforms for analysis and visualization of data across various Institute projects. Second, the Scientist will use, and assist others in using, those platforms to perform data analysis on existing and future Institute datasets. Third, the Scientist will design and execute independent research directed toward an Institute scientific focus area.
A primary duty of the Lead, Bioinformatics and Special Projects is to develop and maintain data analysis pipelines for use by BBI staff and Investigators. The Scientist will leverage local high-performance computing environments and cloud-based resources towards this goal. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in creative problem-solving and critical thinking, as well as a strong familiarity with existing tools and methods in genomics data analysis.
The Lead, Bioinformatics and Special Projects will use these pipelines, and assist others in using these pipelines, to address research questions using Institute datasets. The Scientist will apply domain-specific knowledge in analyzing and summarizing conclusions from these analyses. The Scientist will collaborate with Institute Investigators to define and answer research questions for Investigator-led projects. The Scientist will also develop and communicate best practices for processing complex genomics data.
The Lead, Bioinformatics and Special Projects will also propose and lead research endeavors. These research endeavors may include cell-free DNA technology development and/or other independent research projects, and are likely to involve the use of existing BBI datasets and the generation of new datasets through experimentation. The successful candidate will possess the ability to dissect and analyze complex research problems using a multitude of programming languages and computational tools, as well as the ability to design and lead wet lab research. The Scientist will be responsible for directing the preparation of major proposals and presentations, and will play a lead role in the identification and/or acquisition of research funding.
