GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Lead Forestry Technician will lead a four-to-eight-person crew in various forestry projects and wildland fire incidents. Required to respond, under the supervision of an assigned Engine Boss, to wildland fire requests as part of an interagency agreement. Requests can be made to serve as single resource personnel as well as to join 10–20-person hand crews. Assignments may require up to a 14- day absence from their home base and require overnight camping. Work is physically demanding and consists of frequent bending, lifting, hiking, and walking over rough, sloped, and uneven terrain.
Exposure to adverse weather conditions such as hot dry conditions, rain, snow, and thunder cell activity. Responsible for all applicable safety procedures and protocols are adhered to while in transit and on site for crew assignments, project work, and wildland fire incident response.
Specific project work will include activity such as thinning and piling of small diameter conifers prescribed and pile burning, mowing grasses and shrubs, clearing trails in wilderness areas, fence repair, and a variety of natural resource work such as planting native trees, shrubs, and grasses.
Support and coordinate crew assignments for project work per instruction from the Forestry Lead
Supervisor. Assists in survey, marking, and flagging prescribed treatment areas using GPS and other geospatial sourced data points and works with crew in accomplishing outlined project goals within those demarcations. Implements project work plans as communicated by the Forestry Crew
Supervisor and organizes the crew’s daily field tasks, assignments, schedules, and related travel needs to work locations using tribal vehicles. Works closely with the Director of Natural Resources to ensure proper and timely logistic support for crew activities and equipment needs and oversees
timekeeping and records for crew management (inventory for equipment, supply requisitions, purchasing, support vehicle logs and records, etc.)
SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct a 4-8 Forestry Crew on various forestry projects and assigned fire incidents.
- Attends training, meetings and other events as requested. Communicates relevant information to crew and others. Provides input on crew development, training, and work.
Encourages and develops teamwork among the crew.
- Transport crew safely to and from projects and wildland fire incidents.
- Must be willing to commit to the duration of the Forestry Crew program and wildland fire assignments.
- Encourage and develop teamwork among the Forestry Crew and resolve workplace disputes in a timely and fair manner.
- Receives, implements, and communicates information to crew and others to meet goals and objectives of project work, safety, and other performance expectations.
- Review Incident Action Plan (IAP) and obtain briefing, objectives, and intent from supervisor and participates in operational briefings as directed.
- Identifies safety hazards in field operations. Communicates issues and proper protocols and procedures to mitigate risks. Demonstrates safe practices and procedures for crew to follow. Conducts situational safety training in coordination with environmental coordinator.
- Monitor performance and provide immediate and regular feedback to assigned personnel.
- Ensures Crew Technicians maintain proper refurbishing and resupply of tools, vehicles, food, water, and supplies.
- Performs administrative duties as requested, preparing correspondence, forms, reports, filing and some accounting for grant compliance, crew records and Crew Time Reports (CTR) during project work.
- Transport crew safely to and from assignments and delegate work tasks & responsibility.
- Assign personnel to collect, document, and report weather observations.
- Maintain above-average endurance and superior physical condition. Must be capable of performing strenuous physical labor daily including running, bending, hiking, walking, carrying 50lbs or more; and maintain physical fitness required for the Arduous fitness
(Pack) test.
- Responsible for scheduling vehicle maintenance, i.e., oil changes, tune-ups, and reporting observed or suspected safety issues. Transport crew safely to and from projects.
- Works on a variety of restoration projects including fuels reduction, invasive plant removal, recreation site maintenance, and watershed project work.
- Contribute to the organization by participating in the Susanville Indian Rancheria’s facility wide program improvements, goals, and standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
A. Must be able to commit to the Susanville Indian Rancheria Forestry Program for the duration of the season.
B. Must have a demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts and direct a large crew.
C. Experience at utilizing maps, compass, radios, & GPS equipment.
D. Must be willing to continue training to support development of knowledge and skills.
E. Must have good communication skills, both oral and written.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent from an accredited high school.
2. Must have a valid California driver's license or license from current residence state.
3. Must pass pre-employment background check.
4. Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
5. Must have a valid CPR card or be able to obtain one within ninety (90) days of hire.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION
6. Must have one (1) to three (3) years/seasons of experience in Forestry, Wildland Fire,
Conservation, or related field.
7. Must be 21 years of age for insurance purposes.
8. Must have experience supervising work crews.
9. Must have current Wild Land Fire Fighter II Red Card Certification and have passed the annual Work Capacity Test (Pack Test) at the arduous level.
10. Must show proof of enrollment and/or completion of Wild Land Fire Fighter courses or related courses within the past four years.
11. Must pass pre-employment medical exam.

1. PHYSICAL SAFETY: The work requires minor physical exertion, such as short periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Job may require recurring lifting of lightweight objects with infrequent bending or stooping alternating with the lighter activities. Job requires minimal agility and dexterity.
2. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Regular exposure to unfavorable environments such as weather, body fluids, toxic laboratories, and industrial chemicals, or confined, dirty and noisy locations. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as masks, coats, gowns, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.
