The Lead Sales Associate helps to maintain a clean, well-organized and merchandised store with a customer-first focus. The duties of the Lead Sales Associate include assisting customers in locating and purchasing merchandise, operating and supervising cash register transactions, stocking merchandise, and performing other duties as assigned by the Store Manager to maximize store profitability and customer satisfaction while controlling the legal sale of spirits in the Commonwealth. This hourly position does not include employee state benefits.

Job Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age
  • Ability to effectively lift and physically maneuver at least 65lbs on a repetitive basis
  • Six months of customer service or sales experience, or demonstrate a strong aptitude for service excellence; Experience working in a customer service capacity
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new technology, processes, and efficiencies
  • Enjoy work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Possess a professional, energetic and positive attitude
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as business needs require
  • Ability to adapt and improvise while making good decisions
  • Strong, effective interpersonal and oral communication skills necessary for establishing customer and team relationships
  • Desire to continually develop retail sales skills and knowledge of product and services
  • Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment such as i-Pod scanners, price guns, box cutters, two-wheel dollies, handcarts, and U-boats (six-wheel carts)
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to drive personal vehicle to make bank deposits, transfer products, or provide temporary coverage at other store locations

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Retail, sales, and/or marketing experience and knowledge of retail operations, a working knowledge of and experience with inventory techniques and tasks, merchandise receipt, and merchandising and marketing techniques
  • Six months of supervisory experience (or related experience/ training) preferred with a strong background in sales and marketing is a plus
  • Must be able to motivate others, create a positive environment, handle conflicts and encourage a team
  • Energetic and enthusiastic about selling and working in a diverse team atmosphere
  • Ability to read and follow merchandise planograms and display guides
  • Strong decision making skills and proven ability to manage complex situations
  • Computer proficiency with Windows, MS Word, and MS Excel
  • Ability to work with an electronic point of sale system (POS) and perform cash register functions
  • Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit control
  • Collaborative work style - able to partner with all personnel to drive overall site performance
  • Ability to apply strategic thought and innovation to improve processes for optimal operational efficiency
  • Previous experience working in the alcohol beverage industry or related work (i.e. liquor store, bar, vendor rep or establishment that sells alcoholic products) is a plus
  • Extensive customer service experience including assisting/educating customers on various products
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and with a team, and a willingness to offer suggestions to enhance and optimize operational efficiencies
  • High School diploma or GED

Essential Responsibilities

  • Set and achieve high standards for the customer experience and bottom line financial results
  • Assist in all aspects of store operations, and fully supervise the operation of the store in the absence of management
  • Execute floor leadership - set the example for exceptional salesmanship; provide operational guidance and training to Sales Associates
  • Deliver exceptional and attentive service to our customers. Acknowledge, greet, and offer assistance
  • Learn about VA ABC's product portfolio to provide customers with the best shopping experience possible. Answer questions, provide knowledgeable assistance, and help guide customer product selections
  • Utilize suggestive selling techniques to encourage the sale of premium product selections. Recommend, select, locate and/ or obtain merchandise based on customer need and request
  • Project a positive shopping experience and demonstrate initiative to act quickly to resolve customer questions and concerns
  • Maintain knowledge of current sales and promotions, policies regarding payment, returns, and online ordering
  • Foster an atmosphere of teamwork and encourage adaptability. Provide clear communication of policy and procedure, or focus changes in an ever-evolving sales environment
  • Collaborate, negotiate, influence and network with a wide range of diverse groups, including senior leadership, management, external customers, vendors, and public officials
  • Perform customer ID Challenges (minimum of 70% of customer transactions tendered require an ID challenge for personnel to be eligible for sales incentives), and observe customers to determine the legality of sales. Reinforce the importance of ID Challenge usage with Sales Associates
  • Maintain store visual presentation according to the VA ABC merchandising guidelines
  • Maintain shelf stock and displays to enhance product availability and provide guidance to Sales Associates
  • Perform cashier functions to process sales transactions accurately. Supervise Sales Associates register activity, and provide training or re-training as needed
  • Assist with scheduling personnel to meet the needs of the business so that a great customer experience is delivered while maintaining fiscal responsibility
  • Unload shipments and place stock on sales floor and in stockroom while maintaining safety standards
  • Identify talent in Sales Associates that demonstrate a strong work ethic and willingness for continued advancement and mentor them for further growth and success
  • Maintain store safety and security standards, to include cash handling and banking procedures
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the store and replenish merchandise on the sales floor as it is sold
  • Keep the counters, shelves and stock areas neat and clean. Dust shelves, merchandise, and displays
  • Knowledge of store opening and closing procedures, and emergency sales procedures during power failures
  • Familiarization with standards of conduct and responsibilities of management
  • All other duties as assigned
