Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Team Lead, Administrative Librarians and Director, this position provides friendly, high quality customer service to Library patrons and to assist adults, children, and teens in using library services and facilities. As well as perform para-professional library duties, clerical work, and assist Librarians in all library departments. This position is responsible for clerical work in billing, damages of all library materials as well as, some processing of library materials. There is a three (3) month probation period for this position.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Work any customer service department including Children, Circulation, etc.
  • Check all library materials for damages.
  • Calls patron regarding lost and damaged items
  • Assists patrons in locating materials, both physically and with the Online Public Access Computer (OPAC), reader’s advisory, and offer research assistance as required.
  • Assist with the inventory process.
  • Assist with opening/closing duties including but not limited to, unlocking doors, turning on and logging onto computers, raising the flag, printing date-due stickers, etc.
  • Assist in cleaning and replacing janitorial supplies in public restrooms as needed.
  • All other special projects and duties as assigned.

Employee Responsibilities:

  • Actively welcome all members of the community to Nicholas P. Sims Library and help to raise awareness of all services and resources offered.

  • Answers and monitors phone calls
  • Assists patrons in locating materials, both physically and with the Online Public Access Computer (OPAC), reader’s advisory, and offer research assistance as required.
  • Assists staff during programs by running errands, etc.
  • Assists with physically processing library materials for example stamping and embossing books
  • Attends and participates in meetings, conferences, seminars and committees as budget and schedule allows
  • Attends and participates in weekly staff meetings and training sessions
  • Awareness of desk duties and assigned desk times as related to relieving other staff for breaks and lunches
  • Cleaning library materials as needed
  • Clerical duties and cleaning, such as creating brochures
  • Instructs and assists patrons in using computers and other library equipment.
  • Janitorial and maintenance duties as needed, including replacing janitorial supplies as needed and outdoor cleanup
  • Knowledgeable and ability to work circulation in any department as required including things such as: Checks out, shelving, straightening library materials, entering fines, managing and creating library accounts, etc.
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance.
  • Possesses knowledge of basic circulation policies, including but not limited to loan periods, fines, holds, and shelving
  • Others duties as assigned

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in a public setting with constant contact with many individuals daily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The work environment is usually quiet but may be noisy at times. Employee must be able to work a flexible schedule which may include some evenings and weekends.

Programs may be conducted outside on the lawn, on the bookmobile and/or held at other community facilities. Staff will be required to empty the book return box located outside and carry materials inside the building.

Tools and Equipment Used:

The essential functions of this position require the use of a phone, computer and copy machine, fax machines, printers, as well as working knowledge of integrated library systems (ILS) and applications, Internet online databases, scanner, office software, and email.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.
  • Must be able to reach above shoulder level and stoop below knee level.
  • Must be legally sighted and able to hear to be able to assist patrons.
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required.
