Job Description
TITLE: LIBRARY MEDIA TECHNICIAN
TYPE: Unit E Collective Bargaining Agreement
SALARY: Per Unit E Collective Bargaining Agreement
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and/or Librarian
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The primary function of a library median technician is to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, ethical users of information and ensure equitable access to information.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The selection, purchase (elementary only) and processing of all books and materials for the school library.
2. The plan (elementary) and administration of the process governing the circulation of both print and non-print materials.
3. The initiation and implementation of a process leading to the return of overdue library materials.
4. The inventory of print and non-print materials on a yearly basis
5. Providing assistance to students in book selection and/or research activities as needed
6. Assisting the classroom teacher and/or the librarian in teaching library skills.
7. Supervising and instructing student library aides when applicable.
8. Performing other duties such as storytelling, book repairing, etc. as deemed appropriate by the principal and/or librarian.
9. Lead instruction as required by the principal.
ADA & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, adding machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to stand, crouch and bend over for a long period of time at intervals throughout the day.
2. DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
3. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Including giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
4. LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, procedures, charts, surveys, articles, bid specifications, brochures, news releases, handbooks, budgets, etc., using precribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
5. INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
6. VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, accounting and marketing terminology.
7. NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra and geometry.
8. FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
9. MOTOR COODINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
10. MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
11. INTERPERSONAL: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
12. PHYSICAL COMMICATION: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.

Job Requirements
- REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma is required with post-high school training desirable
2. Background in children's and young adult literature
3. Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System
4. Typing ability - Citizenship, residency or work visa required
