SHIFT: Third Shift / Monday - Friday / 10pm - 6am

MAJOR FUNCTION:

To provide support to the tool room and pressroom for the heat treatment, finishing, surface grinding and modification of tooling.

To operate tool room equipment in support of tool building, tool modification, and replacement parts to aid the production efforts of the company.

MAJOR TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan and perform machining operations to construct, and modify dies, die blocks, inserts, punches, fingers, slides and press mechanical parts.

Includes the requirement to organize work, procedures, sequences, methods, fixturing, tools and materials.

Perform work from blue prints, sketches and verbal description of tool requirements, production problems and required finished part dimensions and tolerances.

May include final finishing and polishing of dies and tooling when performed under the leadership of Tool & Die Makers and/or Tool Room Machinists.

Some work involves the performance of secondary and support operations to prepare and/or finish individual tooling pieces.

Perform final grinding of new punches, dies, inserts and spacers, or modify/sharpen existing or new tooling, with the surface grinder or I.D./O.D. grinder to produce required final dimensions and surface finish and flatness.

Operator is required to plan work, arrange priorities, set-up equipment and adjust feeds, speeds and grinding stroke to produce parts in conformance with tolerances specified.

May include a requirement to devise holders and/or fixtures to hold part or position part at appropriate angle to the grinding or sanding surfaces.

Work is performed to close tolerances and requires examination of part relative to the required dimensions, since the operations performed on the majority of the parts are the final operations before issue to the Tool Control/Storage section or the Pressroom.

Perform final inspection and check on finished parts to assure that completed parts meet the dimensional and tolerance requirements of the tooling print. Involves checking dimensions such as length, height, hole diameters, O.D., finish requirements, hardness and completeness of operations.

Operate band saws and "cut-off" saw to produce tool steel blanks for the production of tools.

Determine the quantity, length, diameter and material specifications for blanks needed and select material from storage racks. Includes a requirement to audit the inventory supply of available tool steel raw material and notify Tool Room supervisor of pending shortages.

Includes a requirement to perform preventive maintenance on the equipment operated, to replace broken or worn blades, and to assure adequate inventory of replacement blades.

Rework, sharpen and modify tooling to correct deficiencies, accommodate tool wear, or adapt obsolete tooling to perform permanent or temporary "duty" as a replacement for broken, missing or necessary duplicate tools.

May involve changing the dimensional requirements or tolerances of new tooling that is found ineffective. Process may involve "trial and error" and small incremental adjustments to eliminate production part defects and press malfunctions.

Operate heat treat furnace to harden finished tooling to specified hardness.

Involves the determination of time, temperature and possible quench or cooling requirements to properly harden the material used, and setting controls to reflect requirements.

Check hardness after cooling by using Rockwell hardness tester.

Sandblast, or sand hardened tools to finish to required surface quality.

Engrave tooling identification number on finished tooling before delivery to tool control.

Occupation requires the ability to use all hand tools, measuring devices and machine tools common to the Toolroom Machinist trade. Requires the ability to read and interpret tooling blue prints and to use measuring instruments such as micrometers, verniers, depth mics, and dial indicators.

Operates tool room equipment such as the Studer Grinder, Sunnen Hone, Bridgeport Mills, Lathes, Surface Grinders and sanders to provide support to the pressroom, Tool & Die Makers and Tool room Machinists. Occupation requires a detailed knowledge of all the above machines, and will include operation of more than two of the named equipment on a regular basis.

Requires the ability to work to close and demanding tolerances with attention to detail when producing parts that are ground and/or finished to final dimensions.

Determine and select proper feeds and speeds to produce desired surface finish from machine tool and cutting tool or grinding wheel used.

Responsible for cleanliness and neatness of surrounding area, and the performance of all duties with the exercise of safe operating procedures to avoid creating an injury hazard for self or others.

Occupation includes a requirement to follow Environmental Health & Safety procedures.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor for additional experience and/or training or refinement skills or in preparation for advancement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Education and additional courses such as machine tool operation, shop math, precision measuring, layout, blue print reading, tooling applications, etc.

EXPERIENCE: No experience required with completion of a Machine Tool Operation course or the equivalent.
