Position Overview

The Illinois School for the Deaf is seeking to hire a responsible and detail-oriented maintenance equipment operator who performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and operation of the automotive equipment at the Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD). This position monitors the ongoing maintenance of State-owned vehicles assigned to ISD; performs simple repairs and adjustments to vehicles; operates mowing equipment, tractors, snowplows, trucks, end loaders, buses, and other motorized equipment and picks up or delivers mail from the Post Office and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and operation of the automotive equipment at the Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD).
  • Monitors the ongoing maintenance of State-owned vehicles assigned to ISD
  • Performs simple repairs and adjustments to vehicles.
  • Operates mowing equipment, tractors, snowplows, trucks, end loaders, buses, and other motorized equipment.
  • Picks up or delivers mail from the Post Office and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires one (1) year's experience in performing a variety of semiskilled mechanical and manual tasks in the maintenance and operation of automotive or related maintenance equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a valid class B-commercial driver’s license with a passenger endorsement (CDL-P) with air brakes and a valid School Bus Driver Permit at the time of hire.
  • Requires ability to acquire air brakes certification from Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within one month of being hired.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Friday & Sunday, Monday - Thursday as needed

Friday: varies between 12:00pm - 12:00am

Sunday: varies between 8:00am - 8:00pm

Monday-Thursday as needed based on assigned trip/route
