Maintenance technicians that have completed their B, A, or Master training are able to apply to a Lead technician. In addition to regular technician activities they must be able to demonstrate leadership skills. A lead technician also supports the supervisor to organize and coordinates the team, especially on the down-day planning, as well to perform other administrative activities.

A lead technician Self-motivated professional able to perform the required Maintenance activities and tasks to keep equipment safe, functional, and efficient by executing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance actions. Maintenance Lead Technicians will also be expected to spend time continuously learning and developing skills through performance enhancement programs provided by and paid for by BBU. Specifically, Maintenance Lead Technicians will be required to learn and demonstrate competency at maintaining and troubleshooting process equipment to progress through training programs which encompass progressive improvement of mechanical, electrical, and basic automation knowledge as well as other disciplines necessary to support the safe, effective, and evolving operation of our manufacturing facilities.


Key Job Responsibilities:

Position is responsible for maintaining machines and equipment in safe, functional, and efficient conditions by executing preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance tasks in a timely manner.

  • Communicate with planner and supervisors frequently to support in planning, scheduling, documenting, and verifying maintenance work to be performed (planned and unplanned).
  • Support in maintaining and managing department backlog, of work orders and PM tasks with a goal of continually reducing unscheduled downtime.
  • Support inventory control as required.
  • Review CM’s and PM’s with maintenance team weekly. Track performance with the team and lead maintenance huddle meetings using KPIs.
  • Monitor, order, set parts to work orders, aid procurement of critical parts for shop inventory.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Support coordinating each technician validates spare parts are available for their assigned PM’s and CM’s.
  • Analyze problems and interpret technical information necessary to make required repairs (troubleshooting of equipment issues).
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on production machinery and facility support equipment.
  • Inspect, operate and test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and validate work performed.
  • Ensure safety by following all company policies including safety rules, procedures and Lock-out / Tag-out procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s), personal safety standards, food safety standards as well as OSHA standards.
  • Troubleshoot equipment as well as plant systems and develop sustainable solutions accordingly.
  • Complete all assigned work orders with safety, quality and within the time allotted. Maintain complete records of work performed using software, workorders, detailed logs and have good communication skills across all groups and departments.
  • Assist with equipment change overs and line startups, and troubleshooting issues as needed.
  • Identify required parts and perform inventory cycle counting.
  • Perform maintenance tasks following food-safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement activities, Gemba walks, and on team projects providing suggestions to improve processes.
  • Complete the assigned training, both classroom (virtual or in-person) and on the job, in mechanical, electrical, control, maintenance systems, etc. continuing to grow maintenance and leadership skillset.
  • Learn and improve technical and soft skills to gain proficiency on maintaining and troubleshooting machinery and equipment.


Key technical Competencies:

  • Able to learn basic computer skills to process work orders.
  • Able to maintain, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Able to identify and maintain compressed air systems and basic plumbing/piping.
  • Able to troubleshoot, repair and align gearboxes, sprocket/chains, belts, clutches, bearings and brakes.
  • Able to use all power tools, hand tools, drill presses, shop tools, etc.
  • Able to identify and use basic measuring tools for mechanical repair (Ex: Calipers, Micrometers)
  • Able to work from drawings, and through verbal communication.
  • Must be able to work shift schedules plus overtime as dictated by the needs of the business, including weekends and holidays.
  • Able to demonstrate practical problem-solving skills
  • Able to develop Maintenance skills through assigned training.
  • Able to learn and apply the principles of the BBU Maintenance and Manufacturing Standards, including lean tools, concept of continuous improvement, reliability, process capability and operational discipline.
  • Able to perform Hot Work/Welding.
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair electromechanical systems.
  • Able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair pumps.
  • Able to identify, maintain, troubleshoot and replace electrical motors and controls.
  • Able to master equipment competencies across functional areas of the bakery. (2 for B level, 3 for A level, and all for Master level)
  • Able to identify, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair power transmissions.
  • Able understand and use KPI tools used within the bakery.
  • Able to train and teach mechanical skills.


Preferred skills

  • Able to read and interpret electrical prints, schematics, diagrams, etc.
  • Able to identify and maintain boilers.
  • Able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair combustion systems.
  • Able to understand basic principles of robotics (Identify axis, operation,)
  • Able to troubleshoot, maintain, replace and program VFDs.
  • Able to troubleshoot, maintain and repair Steam/Humidification circuits.
  • Able to troubleshoot, maintain and replace PLC components.
  • Able to troubleshoot the correct operation of chillers.
  • Able to troubleshoot and replace Servomotors.
  • Able to identify, maintain, troubleshoot and replace electrical motors.

Education and Work History:

  • A combination of education, training and experience that results in demonstrated competency to perform the work.
  • Experience in industrial maintenance in a manufacturing or food processing environment is a plus.
  • Must be a B, A, or Master technician.
