Parks Maintenance Workers are often the first person that parks patrons encounter when they use a City park. Parks Maintenance Workers perform a variety of tasks to ensure the safety of patrons, care for the plants such as planting, pruning and irrigation, and maintenance facilities such as playground equipment, picnic shelters, and restrooms.

- Turf and ball field maintenance, such as, mowing, edging field preparation, fertilizer application, etc.;
- Tree maintenance and support, which includes, ground work, chipper operation, operate chip truck, CDL not necessary, but preferred;
- Irrigation support, which includes, repairing irrigation systems, replacing heads, repairing leaks, and troubleshooting systems;
- Grounds and horticulture support, such as, planting, pruning, fertilizing, irrigation, and landscaping.
What are the minimum qualifications?
- General maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, construction trade or other related manual labor experience.
- Must pass the pre-employment background check, and physical exam.
- Must have a Driver License and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
- Current Spray Applicators License
- Certified Playground Safety Inspector
- Commercial Driving License (CDL)
Successful applicants will be given assignments at varying times depending on area of focus, starting with early spring turf and ball field maintenance. Candidates should focus their applications so that their knowledge of the materials, methods, procedures, tools, and equipment appropriate to the maintenance and construction of parks facilities and operational area or specialty is clearly listed.
