The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a journey-level Maintenance Specialist 2 to assist in the maintenance, repair, and installation of highway signage for the Southwest Region (SWR) Regionwide Sign Crew. In this role, the individual will be responsible for maintaining the advisory, warning, regulatory, and MIS signs along with the pavement markings within the entire region. The work of this position affects the safe and efficient operation of the highway system. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environmental with focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
What to Expect
Work is performed primarily outdoors and is often performed near high-volume highspeed traffic. Work involves frequently maneuvering objects weighing up to and greater than 50 pounds from one location to another. Work may be performed at heights of 40-60 feet with lift equipment. This position may be required to work throughout the SWR, which may require overnight stays.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Specialist 2 will:
Assist the Lead Tech and Maintenance Specialist 3 with planning and executing work activities such as ordering materials, assembling, installing, repairing, and replacing all guide, regulatory, warning and MIS signs within the region.- Work within standard plans and specifications required for traffic signs, delineation, and pavement markings.
- Build signs according to standard plans manual.
- Load signs on sign storage racks and/or on digger derrick for install.
- Operate forklift or boom truck to load and unload materials. Maintain, repair, and install a variety of different style impact attenuators.
- Maintain annual maintenance schedule on all attenuators in the region, which includes cleaning and inspection.
- Repair 3rd party damaged attenuators.
- Wash and trim brush away from signs.
- Re-torque slip base sign bases.
- Repair and/or replace durable pavement markings such as stop bars, cross walks, turn arrows and delineators.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operations, or related experience such as but not limited to construction, timber operations, or farming.
- Commercial Driver's License Class A, with Endorsement N without air brakes restriction, or the ability to obtain one within the 6-month probationary period.
- Willing to obtain an operator certification for the digger derrick and / or knuckle boom, if needed.
- Ability to work at heights of 40-60 feet with lift equipment.
- Ability to maneuver objects weighing up to and greater than 50 pounds from one location to another in a safe manner.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Digger Derek or Knuckle Boom certification.
- Experience operating cranes and rigging.
- Experience working at various heights with aerial equipment.
- Possession of valid Traffic Control /Flagging Card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including
- planning, setting signs and cones or barrels , and flagging or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

- This position is not eligible for remote work.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
