Position Summary

Maintains power plant equipment at Mid Coast Health System (electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and medical air/vacuum systems) in good repair by affecting a conscientious maintenance program. Assumes the responsibility for these systems to ensure uninterrupted services throughout the hospital. To assist in the performance of duties necessary to keep the physical structure and associated equipment of hospital in good repair. Minor electrical work, mechanical repairs, and other duties relating to maintenance are the primary duties. Acknowledges and responds appropriately to the hospital’s customer relations philosophy, including the five fundamentals of the AIDET program.

Position Accountabilities

1. Maintains and operates plant equipment so as to render all equipment operable at all times. Performs preventative maintenance as scheduled and makes repairs as necessary, and participates in “on call” staffing to generally respond within a 1 hour time frame.

2. Maintains Daily Power Plant Log as scheduled. Makes necessary adjustments and repairs to maintain specified perimeters of readings. Reports any unsolved irregularities to the Director of Plant Operations.

3. Keeps power plant and mechanical rooms clean, orderly, and in good condition at all times.

4. Constructs, repairs, and maintains wooden structures such as furniture, equipment, partitions, and other parts of the hospital buildings.

5. Cleans, exercises, and services the electrical distribution system to ensure highest quality performance.

6. Works with each engineer/bio-medical engineer individually to improve their knowledge/skills about all mechanical equipment in such a way that they can handle call outs individually.

7. Works with supervisors and other departments to coordinate shut-downs and repair projects in such a way that will not upset normal patient care routine and other department’s operation.

8. Works with contractors and outside vendors to ensure that work conforms to hospital standards and does not interfere with patient care or normal departmental operations.

9. Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings when required.

10. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Position Qualifications
Minimum Education: High school diploma. Associate Degree in Applied Science preferred. Knowledge of mechanical/electrical systems. Understands air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Experienced in design/repair of mechanical equipment (i.e. pumps, motors, valves, engines, blowers). Experience in design/repair of electrical circuits. Mechanically inclined.

Physical Demands: Prolonged, extensive, considerable standing/walking. Lift positions, pushes, transfer of equipment, and climbing ladders. Vision and hearing corrected to normal is a necessity. Will work in high places and close spaces. Will lift up to 10 lbs. continuously, 11 - 50 lbs. frequently, and 51 - 100 lbs. occasionally. Sit about 1 hour, stand 4 hours, and walk 3 hours at distances exceeding 300 feet.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment. Working at heights, being around moving machinery, and exposed to dust, fumes, and gases.
