These Marine Patrol Officer positions are responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the Marine Fisheries Commission. Law enforcement work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls for service and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints to assess and handle cases, collecting and preserving evidence and following the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work. The N.C. Marine Patrol Officer may also simultaneously carry out responsibilities of patrol officer, inspector, and/or investigator.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patrol coastal land and water areas to inspect fish houses, seafood dealers, and fishermen for compliance with laws and regulations governing the taking, processing, and shipping of seafood.
  • Communicate to the public statutes and regulations governing size limits, the opening and closing of seasons, and waters closed to fishing.
  • Inspect boats used in the taking of clams, oysters, finfish, scallops, crabs, and shrimp to determine that vessels and fishermen are properly licensed, and the catch has been made according to laws and regulations governing license, size, amount, and legal gear requirements.
  • Operate small boats or assist in the operation of large boats to check fishing operations in North Carolina coastal waters.
  • Apprehend and cite violators of Marine Fisheries laws and rules and testify in court.

The Division of Marine Fisheries
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. The DMF’s jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Recruitment Range: $41,498 - $45,450
These positions are located in the following NC geographical areas:

60032606 and 60032673 – Tyrrell County – The recommended candidate for this position will be expected to live within the area south of the Albemarle Sound from Roper East to Alligator River extending south to the Hyde County line.

60032621 – Onslow County - The recommended candidate for this position will be expected to live from Verona south to Hwy 210 or all of Sneads Ferry and North Topsail Beach.

60032630 – Brunswick County - The recommended candidate for this position will be expected to live within the area from Hwy 179 on the west side of Shallotte, to Hwy 130 in Holden Beach, to Sabbath Home Road, to Stone Chimney Road to Hwy 17.

60032688 – Chowan/Perquimans County - The recommended candidate for this position will be expected to live west of Elizabeth City to Chowan River on the northern half of the Albemarle sound to include Hertford and Edenton.

60032674 – Dare County – The recommended candidate for this position will be expected to physically live within the area of Rodanthe to Ocracoke.
Stipend details: A housing stipend of $600 will be paid monthly to compensate the officer who is required to live in the above Dare County area of Rodanthe to Ocracoke, NC. The $600 monthly housing stipend would be forfeited if the incumbent were to transfer out of the assigned area. The stipend is subject to payroll taxes. Subsequent salary increases are applied to the base salary only.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:


  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid NC Driver's License
A successful candidate must meet the minimum requirement of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards before starting employment. This includes passing the psychological and physical evaluation, PT and swim assessments, finger printing, and firearms qualification. Applicants hired prior to completion of the BLET Certification will be required only to show that they are on track to demonstrate the above knowledge, skills, and abilities at the completion of BLET Certification. Applicants must meet the requirements listed under Minimum Education and Experience.

Note for Applicants who have Not Completed Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) in North Carolina:
If you are selected for this job and do not currently possess BLET certification, the Division of Marine Fisheries will sponsor and cover the cost of BLET training, and you will be earning a salary while completing training. During this training period, you be entered into the Teachers & State Employees Retirement System (TSERS). BLET certification must be obtained within one year of the date of hire. Upon successful completion of BLET, you would be enrolled into the Law Enforcement Officers Retirement System. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

Necessary Special Qualifications:


  • Must complete all requirements for an NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training, in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission within one year of employment.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid NC Driver's License.
