Harborview Medical Center’s Interpreter Services Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Interpreter 1, Spanish.

WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time, 40 hours/week (100% FTE), Day shift

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide interpretation for target language(s)

  • o Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff;
    o Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff;
    o Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter; and
    o Utilize/integrate ethical practice to guide behavior in all interpretation.
  • Provide sight translation in the presence of a provider and/or other medical staff.

  • Follow the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Standards of Practice (Appendix A).

  • Consult with providers prior to encounter, assess patients’ communication needs, and explain and clarify cultural behaviors as needed.

  • Provide video remote and telephonic interpretation (in four-hour shifts):

  • o VMI Equipment Operator; and
    o Access Database Data Entry.
  • Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms.

  • Report no-shows and cancellations promptly so as to be able to take substitute assignments.

  • Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and UW Medicine policies.

  • Perform office tasks as needed, using supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.

  • Competent use of technology (e.g. MS Office Suite, email, internet, pagers, etc.).

  • Participate in and support quality assessment and improvement activities.

  • Maintain interpreter certification by obtaining required continuing education.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to selected department projects and committees.

  • Round on Limited English Proficient patients of any language admitted to the hospital (includes informing about the right to an interpreter, use of the I Speak card, providing interpretation as needed, and documenting the rounds).


  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    High school graduation or equivalent AND two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting. AND medical interpreter certification or qualification either from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.
