This is a position for Medical Laboratory Technologist at The Indian Health Service (IHS)/Albuquerque Area Office, Santa Fe Indian Health Center. Located in Santa Fe, NM. This is for a one year contract with a potential to extend four more years.

Medical Laboratory Technologist Duties

The Medical Laboratory Technologist shall perform duties and manage patient needs as identified by the Service Unit. The Medical Laboratory Technologist will serve in the Clinical Laboratory of the SFSU, supervised by the Laboratory/Radiology Supervisor, who is directly under the Clinical Director and CEO. The Medical Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for performing a variety of standardized routine and specialized procedures in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Serology (COVID-19), Urinalysis, Coagulation, Phlebotomy, Specimen, and dispatch requirements. The Medical Laboratory Technologist will need to be proficient with the hospital information system, RPMS (Resource Patient Management System), which is the main method of processing patient specimens and reporting patient test results.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will provide a full range of Laboratory care to patients seen at the facility, including laboratory testing, maintenance of diagnostic equipment, operating automated equipment, and performing complex manual procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Serology (COVID-19), Coagulation, Phlebotomy, special dispatch, and specimen requirements, quality controls, and other diagnostics required by the laboratory supervisor.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist must be capable of performing phlebotomy on various age groups (infants to geriatric ages) and be familiar with requirements and equipment for each age group, such as finger sticks, heel sticks, and venipuncture with different needle gauges. The Technologist will withdraw appropriate quantities of blood by venipuncture, capillary, and/or arterial puncture as required and collect appropriate specimens for lab testing according to established lab procedures.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist must perform satisfactory standards of competence, conduct, appearance, and integrity. They must be able to work independently without supervision after successful completion of competence. The Technologist will ensure patient ID and maintain patient confidentiality to meet patient safety goals.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform required recordkeeping procedures and report discrepancies to the appropriate technologist or COR for patient results, demographics, QC, QA, and performance improvement. The Technologist will also perform start-up, shut-down, daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly preventative maintenance procedures on analyzers and other testing procedures on instrumentation in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Serology (Cepheid) as assigned or instructed.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform Quality Control procedures on analyzers and manual test methods as required, perform semi-annual Calibration verification studies and Method Comparison Studies as assigned, analyze and monitor significant trends, troubleshoot analyzer problems, and identify and recognize technical and instrumental causes of problems.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will recognize factors that can adversely affect specimens, procedures, and results and be capable of determining whether procedures, specimens, or results have been affected. They will then perform corrective action as needed (including sequestering patient samples and retesting after the analyzer issues have been resolved).

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will ensure preparation of tests for all patients, including performing test calibrations and calibration verification studies as needed. They will check specimens, prepare reagents, and maintain adequate supplies. The Technologist will electronically enter or write clinical reports and descriptions of laboratory care.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will examine all patients' lab work, review all testing (lab), request or perform diagnostic tests, and refer tests to internal and external laboratory facilities. The Technologist will complete all tests requested by physicians and refer out when needed. They will make note of all assessments and record results, reporting results to appropriate individuals, calling critical values to appropriate individuals, and recognizing the need for timely reporting of laboratory data and shipment of products and specimens.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will practice Universal Precautions (e.g., wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), wash hands, change gloves between venipuncture, etc.). They will prepare reagents and maintain stores of general, special products for functional and specialized assays of hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, serology, and rapid test methods.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will follow the Laboratory Department policies and procedures and clinical practice guidelines when relevant. They will adhere to federal licensing, accreditation, and regulating body standards from organizations such as CMS, AAAHC, COLA, CLIA, and IHS, and any other agency to which the facility is accountable.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will provide specialty laboratory services to patients at SFSU and work as a team with the medical, nursing, lab staff, other health center departments, and administration. Additionally, they should interact in a professional manner with patients and other staff.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will explain work requirements, methods, and procedures as needed, giving special instructions on difficult or different operations and answering technical questions about the work.

Work Schedule

Rotating 8 hours shift as needed Sunday through Saturday.

Work Shift: 8 Hours Shifts (8:00 am – 4:30 pm and 9:30 am – 6:30 pm), with 30-minute non-paid lunch. The Medical Laboratory Technologist must be assigned hours bi-weekly; scheduled for weekends and Federal holidays; no on call;

Qualifications/Certification

  • The Medical Laboratory Technologist will maintain licensure, certification, heart association BLS.
  • Candidates with previous IHS experience and knowledge with the RPMS as all laboratory work revolves around the Electronic Health Record (EHR) hospital and RPMS laboratory information system. If not experienced or knowledgeable with the RPMS or EHR systems candidates should be able to comprehend and learn these technical systems fairly quickly.
