Balboa Outpatient Surgery Center is an ambulatory care center for located in Corona del Mar/Newport Beach. We specialize in Plastic & Cosmetic, Reconstructive, Pain Management, Spine, Orthopedic, ENT, Bariatric, Podiatry & General. The center is certified by Medicare and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

The Surgical LVN Nurse is responsible to provide professional nursing care to the patient in the immediate post-surgical period. Assess patient’s physical and psychological needs, evaluate and implement appropriate measures to assure a safe recovery from anesthesia.

Typical duties and responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

Clinical Skills

• Provides patient care under the direction of the RN.
• Identifies patient care needs and prioritizes accordingly, asking for assistance from the RN when applicable.
• Wears appropriate attire in restricted areas.
• Adheres to recommended traffic patterns.
• Keeps work areas clean, tidy and stocked, free of soiled equipment and supplies.
• Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique.
• Utilizes aseptic technique and infection control principles to establish and maintain intravenous access.
• Collects and records pertinent patient data. (vital signs, NPO status, medical history, etc.)
• Documentation reflects effectiveness of care/interventions.
• Administers medications according to policy and procedure and within scope of practice.·
• Reports abnormal or unexpected outcomes or observations to RN and/or physician.
• Assists the RN in management of patient complications/emergencies preoperatively and postoperatively.
• Communicates with appropriate personnel.
• Initiates and follows procedure protocols.
• Facilitates actions and activities that support accountability to practice.
• Identifies and initiates problem resolution.
• Actively participates, develops and implements activities and measures promoting quality care.
• Assess the patient’s physical condition upon arrival to recovery room and throughout stay in unit. Respond to these needs with appropriate nursing care.
• Connect patient to monitoring equipment. Is able to interpret information provided by these systems and implement appropriate actions.
• Notify the surgeon in the event of any deviations in expected patterns of recovery from anesthesia.
• Knowledge of anesthetic agents and their actions, emergency drugs, impending complications, and emergency treatment of complications should they occur.
• Demonstrate skill in the management of emergency situations. Has knowledge of all emergency equipment and supplies available. Responsible for the task of monitoring and documenting the function and completeness of the emergency cart on every surgery day.
• Administer medications as ordered by the physician. Document patient’s condition prior to administration and resultant changes in patient’s condition.
• Formulate a nursing care plan for all patients in the recovery area, modifying as appropriate to patient condition.
• Provide a safe, clean and efficient environment for patient.
• Maintain accurate and complete record of patient’s stay in recovery room.
• Reduce risk of infection by practicing strict infection control measures.
• Assess patient’s psychological as well as physical needs, initiate plan to address these needs.
• Assure appropriate supplies are available. Checks equipment operation and reports any malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
• Assist patient with physical activities, dressing, walking, use of restroom.
• Assess needs of patient post-operatively, equipment medications, etc. Assure measures are taken to meet these needs.
• Provide patient and care giver with complete post-operative instructions. Answer questions or refer to physician for further information, as appropriate.
• Be responsible for overseeing and directing all drug utilization control and accountability per policies.
• Medical Records
• Demonstrates knowledge of medical record policy and procedures in management of patient information.
• Participates in medical records QAPI.

• Listens respectfully, gives feedback directly, honestly and talks with others to clarify differences.
• Utilizes translation services when needed.
• Utilizes appropriate services when needed to communicate with employees and patients with speech and hearing disorders.
• Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, their family, and other external and internal clients (including fellow employees) from diverse backgrounds.
