Division Description
Cosma Castings Michigan (CCMI)- a division of Magna International- is located in Battle Creek, Michigan. We are a casting and assembly facility that manufactures automotive body components for GM, Ford, FCA, Honda, and other aftermarket customers. We operate a 300,000-square-foot facility with approximately 500 employees. Summary of Responsibilities
The Melt Manager provides mid-level leadership to employees in a high-pressure vacuum die-casting process foundry manufacturing environment. This role ensures meeting safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency metrics through proper coaching and supervision of employees. The requirements below represent the knowledge, skill, ability, and essential duties required to perform this job successfully. Key Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related field of study; or equivalent work experience
Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience
Minimum of 5 years related experience
Experience working in aluminum metal casting or foundry
Experience with developing a departmental budget and monitoring outside vendors and internal resources, including purchasing and receiving
Experience with performing metallurgical testing on aluminum
Knowledge of MIOSHA safety requirements as applicable to a metal casting or foundry environment
Ability to lead, guide and motivate employees
Understanding of Lean concepts and methodologies, including time studies, writing standard work instructions, work balancing, 5s, seven wastes, Kanban, production stability, and level loading
Time and project management skills, with the capability to prioritize and multitask as needed
Strong analytical and problem-solving ability to design an effective solution
Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate in layperson’s terms to a non-metallurgical layperson
Essential Functions

- Overseeing the aluminum melting operation and the maintenance of equipment, including stack melting units, rotary degassing stations, and RPT equipment in and around the melt department
- Ensure the quality of the aluminum per the chemistry and degassing processes
- Support multiple ongoing projects in a challenging environment
- Explain technical concepts and analysis implications clearly to a broad audience and be able to translate business objectives into actionable analyses
- Provide ongoing training and coaching to employees to ensure proper communication and adherence to all company procedures, policies, rules, and standard work instructions.
- Brainstorming for new ideas and ways to improve development and delivery
- Developing KPIs, metrics, and other monitoring tools to track operational efficiency
- Providing detailed specifications for proposed solutions, including materials, external services, and internal resources required
- Attaining departmental goals on Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Profitability KPIs regularly while ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and DNR standards and regulations.
- Actively troubleshooting any issues that arise during testing and production
- Acting with honesty and integrity and making ethical business choices following Magna’s Compliance Policies and Procedures
