Position Title: Assistant Director, Career Development
Position Overview:
Designs and oversees programs and services related to career development, career choice, job development, and workplace transition. Provides expertise on employment and skills trends. Evaluates and reports on the efficacy of programs. Works to develop partnerships with campus partners and represents the Career Development Center to them and external stakeholders. Delivers individual/group career counseling, workshops, presentations, and/or assists with the design of these programs. Designs and develops resources for students. Establishes standards and procedures for related processes, such as student records maintenance, major exploration, and career preparation. Collaborates with other campus functions (academic advisement, academic affairs, student support, etc.) to develop integrated approach to attracting and retaining students. Measures and evaluates the performance of student employees and develops ongoing training and development.
Department Specific Essential Job Functions:
- Supervises, trains, and assesses student employees.
- Manages front office operations and recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations.
- Ensures supervisees receive regular training and professional development.
- Leads strategies and implements interventions to assist first-year freshmen and new transfer students related to major and career exploration.
- Maintains strategic communication/outreach plans to students related to major/career exploration and student success. May include managing department’s presence on social media.
- Serves as primary Career Development Center liaison with/to academic departments. Leads efforts to integrate career development and major exploration into classrooms and curricular and co-curricular activities.
- Utilizes software to track student retention and academic progress. Coordinates data collection and analysis for Graduate Outcomes Survey and other departmental assessment tools.
- Conducts one-on-one career coaching sessions with students to create career development plans that may include defining education, career, and internship goals; choosing majors; job searching; preparing resumes; developing interviewing skills; and applying to graduate/professional school.
- Prepares reports and proposals for the Director of Career Development when needed.
- Oversees all aspects of Career Development in the absence of the Director of Career Development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience Required:
Requires a university degree in education, counseling or related field and experience that provides extensive knowledge of fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results. 5+ years of experience with leading planning, including program development and innovation, program prioritization, and assessment. Extensive knowledge and comprehensive understanding of functional area. Appropriate professional accomplishments and credentials.
Qualifications/Experience Preferred:
Prior academic advising/career experience. Must be proficient in basic mathematics. Master’s degree. Minimum three years’ experience in advisement, student affairs, or related units within higher education. Proven ability to lead, train and supervise others. Extensive knowledge of University, college, and departmental policies, procedures and resources. Willingness to work within the academic framework of the University and to serve on faculty and student committees.
