The Operations – Photonics Team is a small group of technical team players within the GTA Operations department working together to provide the very best service and support to our customers.

The candidate must have strong and effective communication as well as be able to take on the responsibility of installation, provisioning, and maintaining various communication services. We are also looking for someone who is self-motivated and takes initiative while maintaining the ability to be a team player. The Network Operations Technician I (Transport) is a hands-on role that will be responsible for installation and provisioning/maintenance of various communication services. To be successful in this role, you must have previous experience of working within the telecommunications transport industry, specifically on optical transport services. You should have good communication skills in order to work with other areas of the business and adapt to working under pressure. Here are some other functions with this position:
- Level 1 knowledge of Transport equipment such as Ciena.
- Basic understanding of fiber optic concepts, standards, and theory.
- Basic understanding of DWDM/CWDM concepts.
- Basic knowledge of cable concepts and wiring of TDM, Fiber and CAT5 Ethernet circuits.
- Basic understanding with Fiber Power Meter concepts, Light source, Receiver, Fiber OTDR, Various Fiber Circuit Testers.
- Knowledge of Fiber Characterization testing and Fundamentals, standard and practices
- Knowledge and use of Telecommunication test equipment
- Able to navigate on Transport network with assistance from a Tech II to install, test and troubleshoot all circuits through all layers TDM, Optical, Ethernet, IP layers.
- Basic alarm/fault understanding.
- Basic TCP/IP fundamentals. WAN/LAN, NAT, Ping, traceroute
- Terminal editor CLI (example SSh)
- Basic knowledge of Ciena MCP platform
- Ability to work at Cable landing stations with basic understanding about the fundamentals, operations, network and equipment.
- Good communication skills with underwater subsea cable providers.
- Work not limited to transport technologies.
- Ability to work on other technologies such as IP routers/wireless/headend equipment.
Candidates must show:
- Ability to promote the Company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients, and business partners
- Technical skills – Working knowledge of computer systems/software and computerized billing
- Oral presentation skills – Comfortable with delivering briefings and reports to colleagues, conduct training sessions, and any other tasks related to speaking in front of an audience
- Strong organization skills with an ability to prioritize and plan work activities, uses time efficiently, organizes or schedules other people and their tasks, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment; must be detail-oriented and accurate in work
- Attendance/Punctuality – Consistently at work and on time for scheduled shift and department or customer scheduled meetings; ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent.
- Decision-making – Makes sound, well-informed, fact-based decisions and seeks guidance when needed.
Here’s what you need to have:
- Minimum HS Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Five (5) years of work experience in the Network transport industry
- Regular, punctual, and consistent attendance
- Must be able to work any shift and weekends, variable schedule(s) as necessary to meet the needs and goals of the business
- Work may be performed at various locations under varying conditions
- Requires considerable standing, sitting and reading paper documents and electronic communications
- Requires travel to various locations and company branches in a timely manner
- Ability to walk, stoop and stand for up to 8 hours or more a day continuously
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
