NHSN External Data Validation Specialists

The Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) and Antimicrobial Resistance Program within the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Clinical Epidemiology, is seeking data validation specialists that will be positioned in all 5 regions of Virginia to perform National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) data validation activities as part of a federal grant opportunity. During validation, data validation specialists will assess local surveillance data quality, HAI surveillance data completeness, timeliness, sensitivity and specificity and identify reporter training needs. The main objective of the specialists would be to improve the NHSN surveillance process, resulting in higher quality data for epidemiologic analysis and prevention activities.

Number of positions available: 5

These are contract positions funded through July 2024 with federal grant funds; there may be an option to extend the contract if additional funds are available.

Location:

  • Across Commonwealth of Virginia. Hybrid.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Conduct external validation activities of HAI data submitted to NHSN

Perform abstraction of electronic health records to validate patient information

Review the facility’s surveillance determinations and methods to evaluate surveillance program quality (for example knowledge and practices), data completeness, and reporting accuracy

Report case validation data to the central office at VDH using REDCap

Work with the hospital infection preventionists and identify barriers that are hindering data reporting accuracy

Provide education to NHSN reporters at healthcare facilities about data reporting accuracy, how to map facilities in NHSN and how to determine an HAI case using NHSN case definitions

Conduct onsite visits to facilities to perform validation and provide education

Perform related duties, as required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Understand infectious disease surveillance and data reporting activities
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 codes and medical chart abstraction
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, microbiology, public health or a related field
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in nursing, public health, or a related field
  • Possess up to date knowledge of National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) protocols, surveillance methods, and definitions as written
  • Experience using REDCap tool
  • Minimum of two (2) years healthcare, nursing, lab and/or infection prevention experience

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to travel onsite to healthcare facilities

Salary:

  • Up to $45 per hour
  • Up to 40 hours per week; part time hours available if preferred
