Position Specific Responsibilities
The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) is a fast-growing area within WSU, known globally for our expertise in the most critical areas of aerospace research and development.

This position is responsible for leading employee development in lean manufacturing and cross training of machinery. Developing employees to meet safety, quality, and productivity requirements; maintaining equipment; and improving processes are all key for this role.

Summary of Responsibilities
Manages, plans, and organizes functional area(s) of the machine shop to ensure that goods are produced to standards. Oversees and coordinates the activities and functions that are performed by team. Manages staff and trains staff and ensures employees are following all safety and operating procedures. Assists in strategy and budget preparation for the machine shop.

Essential Functions
  • Oversees the day to day workflow and activity of staff
  • Works with leadership to monitor respective functional area(s) of the shop and makes recommendations to improve performance that impacts the organization
  • Continually trains shop team members of necessary skill levels to accomplish goals
  • Collaborates and strategizes with leadership team to meet quality and delivery requirements and deadlines
  • Ensure employees are following all safety and operating procedures

Requirements

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field



Preferred Education

Minimum Experience

Four (4) years of experience in an aerospace/aircraft/automotive machine shop; One (1) year of experience in a lead or supervisory role



Preferred Experience
  • Three (3) years of manufacturing experience operating CNC cutting machines.
  • Two (2) years of leadership, supervisory, or management experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
  • Process Engineering and Process Improvement experience such as Lean, Six Sigma, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong computer skills with ability to work within production software programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use Mastercam and CATIA software effectively.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Ability to document, plan and execute tasks.
  • Established project management skills.
  • Successfully leads and manages in a thriving environment, with a “can-do” attitude when complex situations arise.
  • Takes initiative and recovers from matters quickly.
  • Drives deadlines and schedules consistently.
  • Ability to conduct performance evaluations, setting expectations & standards for employee growth.
  • Excels in rigorous situations with positive outcomes.
