DUTIES:

• Assists the Public Defender and staff with case preparation and legal research.
• Performs procedural and substantive legal tasks.
• Prepares legal documents and forms to be filed with the Court.
• Handles highly confidential documents and information related to the Public Defender's operations and personnel practices.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Associates Degree in criminal justice or paralegal studies or lawyer's assistant program accredited with the ABA and one year of experience working in a legal environment.
• Experience working in the criminal justice system or law office is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must possess a valid vehicle operator's license.
• A pre-employment physical and drug test are required before employment.
• Subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

• Must have sufficient knowledge through formal education and experience in criminal law to qualify to perform work of a legal nature under the supervision of an attorney.
• General knowledge of the operating procedures of a county court system.
• Proficient use of personal computers and standard office software.
• Organized, with strong communication and writing skills. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to exercise independent judgment while interacting in a professional manner.
