Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies has been a signature component of Rutgers University Newark’s commitment to be an anchor institution for the metropolitan area. Cornwall’s specific role is bringing the campus’s intellectual talent and other resources to bear on the challenges of revitalizing Newark and similar communities in the region and state. To this end, the Center sponsors research projects, publications, conferences, symposia, seminars, workshops, public forums, and incubates projects translating research into effective practice. In all its work, Cornwall is especially concerned with supporting the most vulnerable urban populations.

Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Parent Academy Leader (Clerical Assistant – Temporary) for the Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies. The Parent Mentor Academy is an initiative of the Cornwall Center at Rutgers University-Newark. The program aims to develop a critical mass of parents and caregivers as tutors to improve student academic outcomes, improve school climate and promote positive engagement in schools across Newark.

Parent Academy participants will receive support and training from administrators, academic specialists, and university faculty and staff. Parent Academy participants will receive training before being assigned leadership roles. During the 2022-2023 academic year, parents will assist teachers and serve as tutors duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist and reinforce academic instruction for students in schools across Newark
  • Support the school administration, provide academic assistance, provide remedial assistance, promote inclusive practices
  • Serve as parent leaders
  • Serve as ambassadors to increase parental engagement in schools across Newark

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and/or up to 4 years of relevant office, clerical, bookkeeping, library assistant or related experience depending on the duties to be performed.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Certifications/Licenses

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer applicants to have a high school diploma/GED and/or a year of relevant experience. However, this position provides training and is meant to serve the parent population of the economically underserved Newark community. A lack of formal education will not hinder the hire from completing the necessary duties of the job.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Applicants must complete provided by Cornwall Center staff prior to starting the position
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in written form
  • Must have a passion for working with youth and exhibit professionalism at all times
  • Candidates must exhibit cultural competence
  • Candidates should be sensitive to the complexity surrounding the challenges that our scholars face.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Prospective employees should speak with their hiring manager to determine which policies apply to the role or position for which they are applying. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain a medical or religious exemption from the University will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
