Job Description:

Job Summary:

Performs activities related to transportation of patients to and from diagnostic testing, room to room transfers, discharge, and admission as directed by nursing and ancillary departments. Serves the customer base in the facility such as: patients, visitors, physician offices, ancillary departments and nursing units.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

1. Transports patients via wheelchair, stretcher, bed, morgue cart, vess chair to and from clinical, ancillary and support department areas within the facility.

2. Functions independently through the utilization of an interactive voice response computer-based Transport Tracking System.

3. Knowledgeable of equipment used in patient care: Golvo and Viking Lifts, Shuttle Chair, slide and roller boards, overhead frame, traction, gait belt and liquid/compressed gas oxygen containers.

4. Responsible for care of department equipment (Companion phone, wheelchair, oxygen tank and stretcher) and retrieval of said equipment.

5. Transports to morgue, documents on log and releases deceased patients to funeral home.

6. Responds to emergency and safety codes per Hospital policies.

7. Utilizes proper body mechanics when lifting, moving or transporting patients.

8. Practices universal precautions or other isolation guidelines as indicated.

9. Maintains a safe environment for the patient by following the policies related to side rails, restraints and falls protocol. Keeps patient’s room free of clutter and maintains a clear path in room after returning from transport.

10. Maintains established Baptist Healthcare and Transportation Department mission, policies and procedures

11. Respects the privacy of patients/customers and the confidentiality of information.

12. Reports malfunctioning equipment to nursing staff or transport supervisor. Maintains an organized, safe and efficient work environment and complies with all Infection Control policies and procedures.

13. Demonstrates positive customer relations by establishing a rapport and a cooperative working relationship for all customers including but not limited to: patients, family members, visitors, physicians, nursing and ancillary units.

14. Demonstrates professionalism through:

  • Positive and effective communication skills.
  • Supportive and constructive behavior.
  • Friendly and helpful manner to all customers.
  • Adhering to departmental and hospital dress code and time and attendance Policy.

15. Promotes corporate integrity through compliance with the BHS Corporate Responsibility Program.

16. Performs other duties as directed by Manager, Supervisor and Lead Transporter.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:

1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

2. Must have thorough working knowledge of location, functional purpose and general source provided by nursing areas and all ancillary departments.

3. Previous experience as a Transporter within the facility.

4. BCLS required (due within 90 days.)
