Baylor College of Medicine and Department Summary:

The Section of Vector Biology and Bacterial Pathogens in the Division of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is expanding to study endemic and emerging vector-borne diseases in low- and middle-income countries. This position is suited for an expert studying ticks a tick-borne pathogen. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in molecular biology of pathogenic spirochetes, molecular diagnostics, and working with ticks and tick-borne pathogens. The successful candidate will also support the development of molecular tools to study gene regulation of tick-borne pathogens with the goal of identifying vaccine and diagnostic candidates.


Specific Duty

  • Assist with IRB proposals.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining IACUC protocols.
  • Develop a course in vector-borne diseases for NSTM.
  • Support the Section of Vector Biology and Bacterial Pathogens by providing services in molecular biology, proteomics, and gene regulation.
  • Participate in the expansion of the Section of Vector Biology and Bacterial Pathogens by developing additional tick-borne pathogen models like Anaplasma, Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia turicatae, and/or Borrelia miyamotoi.
  • Discovery and production of new antigens from pathogens of interest for testing as vaccine candidates and diagnostics.
  • Use E. coli as well as other expression systems for antigen production.
  • Wide experience with heterologous recombinant protein expression systems in prokaryotes.
  • Experience in molecular diagnostics.
  • Experience working with the natural cycle of ticks and tick-borne pathogens.
  • Experience working with small animal models.
  • Grants writing experience and scholarship.
  • Experience in training students in research expertise in molecular biology. It would also be desirable for the candidate to have knowledge and experience in the use of animal models of infectious diseases
