POSITION TITLE: Peer Recovery Mentor
REPORTS TO: Clinical Director
FLSA STATUS: 1 FTE/ Non-exempt
Salary: DOE
POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Peer Recovery Mentor models recovery-oriented principles with consumers while using empowerment strategies, practicing and teaching self-advocacy skills and fostering independence. A Peer Recovery Mentor acts as a role model for clean and sober living while offering engagement support for clients and assisting in the promotion of abstinence, self-sufficiency and health, wellness and recovery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Work together with supervisor, other colleagues, and professionals to enhance the provision of services and supports.

Engage consumers in varied settings (community, home, recovery centers, courts, hospitals, probation parole offices, etc.)

Assist consumers in identifying barriers to full participation in services and develop strategies to overcome those barriers.

Link individuals with self-help and/or support groups that exist in the community.

Assist consumers in system navigation.

Complete any tasks assigned by the Program Supervisor, Clinical Supervisor, and Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
A self-identified person in recovery from a substance use disorder who meets the abstinence requirements for recovering staff in alcohol and other drug treatment programs. Minimum time in recovery is 2 years.

Able to maintain the philosophy of self-direction, choice, and empowerment.

Possesses insight pertaining to personal biases and world view.

Able to recognize and maintain professional and personal boundaries and to comply with their professional code of Conduct.

Recognizes addiction as complex condition with biopsychosocial roots.

Able to understand the impact of stigma and shame on the recovery process.

Able to respond to consumers in a respectful, professional, and caring manner.

Is acquainted with local community resources.

Possesses strong verbal and written skills.

Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures

Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.

Able to work some evening and weekend hours.

Able to maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Valid Oregon Driver’s License

Background Check: Criminal Background Check as performed by Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and ACCBO for the PSS/PWS/CRM certification process by the Background Check Unit (BCU) accepted. A criminal record does not necessarily exclude an individual from certification.

Experience: Identifies as having lived experience of addiction and mental health challenges, has a strong personal recovery program, and is willing to share when appropriate and within boundaries.

Understands the effect of trauma on health, coping, and other aspects of individual needs. Understands the principles of recovery, consumer-involvement and trauma-informed care.

Must have completed or be willing to complete upon hire the Oregon state approved peer recovery specialist training.
CONFIDENTIALITY:This position requires the handling of highly confidential information. Must adhere to rules and laws pertaining to client confidentiality.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must be able to communicate information in both oral and written form with the ability to present and exchange information internally across teams and co-workers, and externally with clients and the public, Information communicated ranges from routine/ basic information to complex and confidential information
LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK: Must be able to work effectively and constructively with other office staff, clinicians, the administrative team and all other staff. Participates in staff meetings.
PHYSICAL DEMAND:
This position requires you to be regularly available for work as scheduled. Position requires professional and personal skills to cope with stress associated with work involving a high degree of mental, emotional and physical demands. This position also requires the ability to bend, stoop, push and pull. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk and hear; use hands and fingers and handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office environment and the noise level is usually moderate, but occasionally may be exposed to loud noise such as raised voice levels and alarms. Occasionally the work environment may extend to other community offices, residential houses, and off-site locations.
This position may be exposed to the everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as an office (i.e., moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and electrical shock). This person will be serving clients from all demographics within the community.
