Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. The NP will be responsible for providing primary care for patients on the units while maintaining standard of appropriate medical care. The NP will also perform and document medical evaluations (including medical history, physicals, etc.); develop, document, and provide treatment for patients with acute and chronic medical conditions; order and interpret routine diagnostic studies; obtain necessary consents for treatment; discuss with patient and family regarding medical issues and treatment; collaborate with supervising physician; and refer patients to outside licensed providers for specialty or consultation as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of approved nurse practitioner training course and current certification. Current, unrestricted RN and NP licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The applicant will have knowledge of primary care at the nurse practitioner level with training in physical diagnosis, pathology, and medical therapeutics; should be able to recognize common manifestations of physical illness encountered in this type of patient population (upper respiratory infections, chronic obstructive lung disease, diabetes, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of laboratory evaluation and laboratory monitoring of psychopharmacologic agents. Bilingual preferred. Veteran's preferred.
