Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy Charter Public Schools Principal (1.0 FTE)OBJECTIVE: Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy Charter Public School (the Academy) seeks a middle school Principal who ensures all school staff have access to the knowledge, skills, and resources that they need to implement the schools mission to develop high achieving students of good character who use problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills to inspire others and catalyze educational, economic, and political advancement within their communities and the broader nation.The Academy is a standalone middle school that serves grades 6-8 in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. The vast majority of our students come from low income and/or historically marginalized backgrounds, and we believe the most impactful way to close the achievement gap is through great teaching, high expectations for all students, and a curriculum that is rigorous and reflects the cultures, values, and traditions of the students and families that we serve.POSITION OVERVIEW: The Principal is expected to have expertise in instructional leadership that directly impacts student academic outcomes.
The Principal should be prepared to collaborate with colleagues across departments. The Principal will ensure all students have access to meaningful instruction and is responsible for leading with equity and authenticity.The Principal will demonstrate the leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and parents in a diverse environment. The Principal must have excellent analytical skills as well as oral and written communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills.The Principal will foster a cohesive, clear vision for teaching and learning that aligns all aspects of the schoolcurriculum, instruction, assessment, policy, equity, and cultureto student learning. The Principal will engage school constituents in creating a rigorous academic program and positive school culture that root out disparities in achievement.
The Principal will continuously communicate the vision for all constituents, recruiting internal and external partners (including parents) to support the vision. The Principal will identify and remove impediments from the path to achieving the school vision.RESPONSIBILITIES: Instructional LeadershipProvides leadership to the school staff, defines and clarifies objectives, and stimulates high levels of job performance. Plans, directs, implements, and evaluates the instructional program in the Academy, including responsibility for implementing the Academys curriculum in accordance with the needs of the Academy. Recruits, hires, develops, and retains diverse teachers and staff to create an education team that meets the learning opportunity needs of all students in the school, including those in regular education, students with disabilities, and multilingual learners.Assumes primary responsibility for increasing student achievementDevelops and implements the use of technology so as to ensure student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate.Analyzes student achievement data to identify areas in greatest need of improvement and to inform school improvement efforts.Effectively supervises the classroom co-teaching teams, content-based coaches, interventionists and Learning Specialists.Conducts daily classroom observation to analyze instruction, supervise staff and provide feedback, to ensure continuous improvement in teaching and learning.Follows DESE evaluation process for all staff, ensuring all timelines are met and components completedRemains professionally knowledgeable through professional organizations and an examination of professional literature as to innovative practices in other schools and other changes in educational practice.
Management and OperationsIs responsible for the allocation and control of school budgets.Creates a schoolwide schedule and adjust as necessary.Ensures a safe and nurturing environment for students, staff, and families.Manages school, facilities, and operations.Prepares and submits reports required for management of the district.Complies with the state and federal laws, policies and collective bargaining agreements.Responds to the complaints and grievances of various constituents, including staff, students and/or parents; resolves grievances. Enforces the Student Code of Conduct as necessary.Family, Community, and Student EngagementStrengthens teacher and staff capacity to cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families of diverse backgrounds and with community members that support student achievement and student wellbeing.Establishes two-way communication tools with parents in their respective languages.Seeks and develops strategic partnerships that will provide students with access to sports and extracurricular activities that add value and help drive academic success.Implements the Academys policies around school-based management and shared decision-making, including establishing and supporting the Instructional Leadership Team, Parent Leadership Team and Parent Advisory Council in fulfilling their responsibilities.Ensures the active involvement of students at all appropriate levels, including the development of student government.Demonstrates cultural competencies and inclusive leadership through behaviors and decision-making.Presents to the Board of Trustees as needed.Qualifications Required: Masters Degree.Possession of a valid Massachusetts School Principal License or proof of successful completion of MA-PAL.Shelter English Immersion Admin Endorsement (SEI).Three to five years of K-12 teaching experience. Three years of K-12 administrative experience.Experience with budget preparation and implementation.Advanced technology skills (e.g., Google Classroom, discipline, attendance, and academic data platforms)Current authorization to work in the United States candidates must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.Qualification Preferred: Urban teaching or leadership experience in a middle school educational setting.Both English as a Second Language and Special Education Licensure.Being multilingual.
