Public Health Education Specialist Job at Axle Informatics
Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Public Health Education Specialist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) located in Bethesda, MD.
Overall Position Summary and Objectives The purpose of this position is to provide strategic support to the Health Education Team Lead in NHLBI's Office of Science Policy, Engagement, Education, and Communications, Health Education and Digital Information and Dissemination Branch by developing, implementing, and evaluating dynamic, research-based, and audience-centric health education programs across a range of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders; leading and coordinating public health education and communication efforts of professional, voluntary, media, and local community organizations, Federal and State agencies, and audience-specific advocacy and public interest groups; and overseeing the development of educational materials and resources.
Deliverables:
- Work products and documents related to planning, developing, and implementing innovative strategic communication and health education plans to communicate information and messages about HLBS research initiatives and public health issues; develop and implement health education strategies to communicate HLBS messages; ensure that “discoveries” in NHLBI-supported laboratories and clinical trials are disseminated to health professionals and the public; advise the OSPEEC HEDID Branch in recommending specific research projects or study results for health education promotion. - Yearly
- Word products and documents related to preparing a health education documents on specific NHLBI topics. Products will consist of narrative detailing the communications environment which will be presented for discussion, refinement and disseminated to audiences. - Yearly
- Word products and documents related to preparing a health education strategies, detailing key areas, including: purpose, goals, objectives, intended audiences, obstacles, core messages, message concepts, tone, openings, tactics, and creative considerations. - Yearly
- Word products and documents related to preparing a Draft Health Education communication plans, providing creative and innovative approaches, including: goals and objectives, intended audiences, messages, tactics, evaluation mechanisms, resources. - Yearly
- Computer-generated work including preparing biweekly reports detailing status of communications activities with the HEDID branch, OSPEEC, Divisions, Offices, and Centers. - Yearly
- Coordinates community outreach efforts and activities for the program.
- Build, foster, and maintain collaborative partnerships to strengthen the resources available for extending the reach of NHLBI health awareness and education programs and broad-based education initiatives to improve public health
- Attends and gives presentations at major conferences or meetings and participates in discussion with community groups.
- Liaise with NHLBI partners to foster collaborative working relationships, resolve problems or issues, and sustain long-term working relationships
- Actively participate in branch and office meetings and projects, providing relevant recommendations based on experience and expertise
- Establishes collaborative relationships with a variety of community organizations (e.g. community health centers, state medical agencies, managed care organizations).
- Organize and liaison with community members to develop programs that will engage and educate communities to increase awareness of research.
- Lead and coordinate public health education and communication efforts of professional, voluntary, media, and local community organizations, Federal and State agencies, and audience-specific advocacy and public interest groups 5
- Liaise with NHLBI partners to foster collaborative working relationships, resolve problems or issues, and sustain long-term working relationships
- Coordinates the analysis and evaluation of outreach activities, including internal and external partnership.
- Assess published and public literature regarding best practices for recruitment, retention and outreach.
- Utilize state-of-the-art techniques to determine consumer health information needs and preferred formats that will motivate the target audiences and influence behavior changes 3
- Utilize traditional and social media platforms to disseminate health information to target audiences 4
- Works closely with management to coordinate content of materials, advertisements and marketing messages.
- Assist with providing oversight NHLBI for OSPEEC and advising contract staff in the development of health education and information materials for patients and their families, health professionals, and the general public that reflect accurate translation of NHLBI research and medical advances 1
- Demonstrate understanding of the scientific issues and research findings relevant to the NHLBIs mission and consult with Institute scientists to develop effective public health information materials and research dissemination interventions 2

- Previous experience with health promotion, communications, outreach, education, or public policy.
- Expertise in written communication principles, techniques, and methods to develop informational and educational public health information and strategic communication plans; write and/or edit reports, fact sheets, and articles for publication; and prepare responses to individual or groups.
- Expertise in oral communication principles, techniques, and methods to orally respond to inquiries and present information to a variety of groups or representatives with varying levels of understanding and interest.
- Expertise in data gathering methods and analytical and evaluation techniques to draw valid conclusions.
- Build, foster, and maintain collaborative partnerships to strengthen the resources available for extending the reach of NHLBI health awareness and education programs and broad-based education initiatives to improve public health.
- Expertise in development of educational materials and resources utilizing health literacy, plain language, and cultural competency principles.
- Expertise in design and implementation of technically sound analytic and evaluation plans to evaluate progress and impact of national health communication and public health awareness/education efforts.
