Job Summary/Purpose: Under limited supervision, the MUSC Health Division Public Safety officer is responsible for routine patrols in and around divisional buildings giving particular attention to and often rechecking those locations. Patrols buildings, checks for unsafe conditions, fire checks, prowlers, vandalism, and other unusual occurrences. Makes rounds of assigned area at least three times during shifts, while making written reports and logs of issues found and operational duties. Promptly responds to emergencies and interacts with other care team members, patients and visitors during normal activities while on shift.
Monitors alarm activations and video camera systems for potential security and safety issues that are currently occurring as well as investigations of incidents that are past, with complete reports and recommendations sent to supervision. A courteous attitude is a must and the ability to verbally de-escalate situations as they arise, leading to possible physical management if the situation dictates. Ability and effort to maintain warm greeting protocols with all persons in contact with, with helping attitude to properly display the warm and welcoming environment set out by MUSC-Health Lancaster Division.
Ability to listen attentively to radio communications and give specific details and speak clearly when operating issued radio communication devices while able to respond immediately when directed to a location needing assistance from public safety personnel.
Performs duties of public safety officer to assist supervisory personnel in peace and decorum in buildings and on all grounds. Parking lot patrol to include ticketing of unauthorized parking and assisting local law enforcement in parking and traffic management in times of duress to maintain the safety of the campus. It is also the purpose of this position to provide escort services for all care team members, patients and visitors that may need assistance with ride services, as well as the protection of property both state and personal, while located on campus, to insure possible protection from vandalism, theft, loitering, and other possible safety concerns.

Additional Job Description

Education: A high school diploma or GED is a requirement of this position.

Experience: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written. Ability to comminate tactfully with the general public and specialty patients to include patients with behavioral health concerns or those with altered mental status that may want to cause harm to themselves or others. Knowledge of methods of security in buildings and grounds to include ability to de-escalate situations once alerted. Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders and handle situations as they arise. Minimal computer literacy. Ability to work overtime as required.

Required License/Certifications: Current and valid drivers license. Must be able to complete and maintain certification of SC State Constable Class 1 or 3 advance or as approved SLED armed security credentials. Candidate must be able to pass a complete background check including a criminal background check required by SC State Law Enforcement Division as this position requires the applicant to carry a firearm and other tools needed for detainment while on property.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders. Ability to reach in all directions, maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors and outdoors with seasonal weather changes and conditions. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 pounds unassisted and ability to lift from 36” to overhead objects or items in excess of 15 pounds.
