The Opportunity
This position works out of our Plymouth location in the EP division.
In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.
As the R&D Technician III, you'll have the chance to be responsible for the entire 3D printing lifecycle work in Abbott’s 3D printing lab at the Plymouth, MN location in our Electrophysiology division. In this role, you will enhance processing customer orders submitted via request system, 3D model file preparation, printing, post-processing, packaging, and shipping. Each day offers new projects, new customers, and new challenges, critical thinking to solve problems quickly, and direct involvement in the mission to deliver high quality models to our customers.
What You’ll Work On
Operate all 3D printer technologies including: 3D Systems, Stratasys, and FormLabs
CAD model pre-processing using Solidworks 2018 or later, preparing 3D models for printing
Collaborate with our customers to conceptualize optimized design solutions for 3D printing
Harvesting, cleaning, assembling, finishing, packaging, and shipping parts
Conducting regular and preventative maintenance on the printers and associated lab equipment
Interface with our vendors to troubleshoot equipment related issues
Procure 3D printing materials to maintain inventory levels on-hand
Lead continuous improvement projects to improve throughput efficiency, reduce cost, and improve the quality of the models delivered to our customers
Ability to provide solutions to moderately complex or infrequently occurring problems by using existing precedents or procedures
Ensure quality system requirements are being met
Ensure a safe work environment consistent with OSHA requirements and Abbott Policies
Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors
Performs other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned
Required Qualifications
Technical/Associates Degree or Equivalent Work Experience
4+ years of work experience operating and maintaining 3D printing equipment
Exposure to a variety of post-process finishing techniques (e.g. sanding, polishing, spray painting, resin dipping, etc.)
Experience working with vendors to procure materials and troubleshoot equipment related issues
Experience using SolidWorks 2018 or later versions
Experience using engineering measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers
Experience using Microsoft Office products
Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment
Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment
Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects
Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
Multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner
Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills
Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Solidworks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) certification
Experience using CAM applications (e.g. Solidworks CAM or Mastercam) or willingness to learn through OTJ
Experience generating and importing anatomical models from CT Scan data (e.g. Materialise - Mimics/3Matic) or importing 3D scanned data into SolidWorks or willingness to learn through OTJ
