Registered Communications Distribution Design (RCDD) Engineer

LATA is searching for 2 RCDD engineers for a contract with WMATA (DC Metro).

The applicant will help manage WMATA’s cabling infrastructure. The individual(s) will have knowledge in creating, planning, integrating, and executing telecommunications and data communications technology for new buildings and existing infrastructure. The title of RCDD represents certification in the field by BICSI, a global organization specializing in ICT education, certification, and standards.

As an RCDD engineer, your primary roles include:

• Determining the telecommunication needs of WMATA.

• Examining and designing a cabling infrastructure for WMATA projects.

• Assessing how well the design will serve WMATA’ future needs.

• Managing WMATA projects to ensure the infrastructure is installed safely and correctly.

• Making necessary modifications if the facts on the ground differentiate from its original blueprints.

• Responsible for ensuring each project meets its industry requirements.

Responsibilities / Duties:

• Ability to develop construction drawings and specifications.

• Cost Estimating skills (project construction estimation) Takeoffs, BOM development and labor cost.

• Understands the installation of voice and data networks by running, pulling, terminating, and splicing copper and fiber optic cables.

• Understands the mounting of telecommunications equipment, routers, switches, multiplexors, cable trays, and alarm systems; installation of racks and cabinets all while following industry standards, best practices, and manufacturer requirements.

• Understands the installation of cable pathway systems (cable trays, cable racks, J-hooks or D-rings) by using power or manual fasteners, drills or other power equipment.

• Understands the installation and maintenance of new and existing fire stopping systems in conduits, trays, wall/ceiling/floor penetrations.

• Documents network labeling and routing equipment and cables; recording configuration diagrams and specifications.

• Maintains customer rapport by listening to and resolving concerns, answering questions.

• Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.

• Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Physical Demands:

• Willingness to work days, nights and weekends as required.

• Must provide a valid driver’s license and/or be able to maintain reliable transportation to get to and from the jobsites.

• Ability to use a variety of general and specialty hand tools and test equipment.

• Must maintain a safe work environment.

• Must have the ability to discern colors used for safety and telecommunications terminations.

• Willing to work in tight, confined areas and stand in one place for long periods of time.

• Ability to carry and climb ladders as needed.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

• Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification is required.

• 8+ years developing layout and design for technology systems including voice, data, and structured cabling.

• Bachelor’s Degree or additional equivalent years of experience in lieu of degree.

• Must be well versed in BICSI rules, regulations, and standards.

• Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, EIA, TIA, industry standards and other applicable codes related to the design and layout of IT, low voltage, and telecommunications systems.

• Experience with Microsoft Excel and Vizio.

• Must have knowledge of basic computer skills and good writing skills.

• Must be knowledgeable in codes, industry standards and best practices.

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook a plus.

• Must work well with little supervision individually and in a team environment.

• Candidate may be required to have a public trust clearance.
