This position provides technical consulting and remote sensing/geospatial data processing to support environmental use-cases within Chevron’s business units and across the Enterprise, including for environmental baseline studies, impact assessments, and environmental monitoring programs.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
- Utilize geospatial & remote sensing to characterize & monitor environmental conditions for exploration, capital projects, operations, emergency response, & other activities.
- Lead geospatial & remote sensing R&D projects & support technology collaborations with industry partners, university & research institutions, & vendors.
- Evaluate new geospatial & remote sensing technologies for environmental applications such as ecological/biodiversity baseline and monitoring, emissions detection and quantification, remediation site characterization and monitoring, and oil spill/emergency response.
- Work with SBU & other stakeholders to understand business problems, educate them on the application of geospatial & remote sensing technologies & objectively evaluate options, including costs & trade-offs.
- Manage environmental remote sensing and geospatial projects with internal clients and external vendors/stakeholders (e.g. data providers, external consultants) from conception to execution including project planning, budgeting, delivery, and reporting.
- Perform remote sensing and geospatial data analysis, modeling, and data processing including development of data processing pipelines to support environmental projects, and R&D activities; examples include:
- Experience with inverse modeling, particularly when it comes to using met data to convert sensor methane measurement data to emission rates.
- Data processing/analytics using machine learning methods to derive environmental information map/products from multisource remote sensing data (e.g. satellite, aerial, UAS) such as Land-Use/Land-Cover, vegetation structure/function, biodiversity metrics, oil spill distribution/thickness, and change detection.
- Creating, compiling, and publishing geospatial data layers for environmental properties of relevance to Chevron’s assets (e.g. Environmental Sensitivity Index maps, biodiversity and conservation data, emissions and flaring data).
- Developing data processing pipelines to automate the analysis of open-source and commercial satellite remote sensing data sources.
- Internal and external outreach including delivery of internal training opportunities, presenting to internal Chevron groups and events, participation in external conferences/workshops, and publishing of external peer-reviewed papers/reports.
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of related work experience.
- Master’s degree in Remote Sensing, GIS, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, or a related field with significant course/research component involving remote sensing/geospatial data analysis.
- Strong understanding of remote sensing methods and data sources including satellite, aerial, and drone/UAS based capabilities, and applicability to environmental monitoring use-cases.
- Experience in deriving environmental products from remote sensing and geospatial datasets using COTS software (e.g. ArcGIS, ENVI/IDL, eCognition), and/or open source tools (e.g. Python, QGIS).
- Demonstrated experience in managing remote sensing and geospatial projects and data from inception to completion.
- Experience in identifying issues and interfaces, engaging stakeholders, and facilitating team alignment to develop and execute solutions.
- Ability to plan and manage numerous tasks within aggressive deadlines to advance strategies and objectives.
- Ability to interface with industry associations, representing Chevron, learn new best practices, and apply to current and future projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of related work experience.
- Intermediate programming skills with Python and knowledge of common geospatial/remote sensing libraries/API’s (e.g. Google Earth Engine, Microsoft Planetary Computer, SentinelHub), and experience in developing data processing workflows.
- Experience with ML/AI model development and application.
- Experience with inverse modeling of emissions data.
- Experience of cloud infrastructure (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCS) and evolving geospatial/remote sensing standards (e.g. STAC, Cloud Optimized Geotiff).
