Uses advanced contracts and grants concepts to manage high volume and high complexity transactions. May review and guide others in the review of financial and administrative management requirements of research contract and grant proposals, awards, and / or transactions to ensure compliance with institutional and sponsor policies. Works independently to assess complex grant, contract and subcontract transactions where analysis requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. May review and sign transactions for less experienced staff. May serve as a technical specialist in a particular area, such as federal contracts, state contracts, subcontracts or information systems. Position is eligible for remote work, subject to campus and departmental guidelines.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a research and teaching department in the School of Pharmacy (SOP) at UCSF. The Department office is staffed to provide management and administration for financial personnel, facilities, Chemistry and Chemical Biology Graduate Program, Biophysics Graduate Program, Biomedical Informatics Graduate Program, teaching, curriculum and academic program activities and operations in the Department. The Department consists of 45 faculty, 15 joint faculty, 51 Academic (Professional Researchers & Specialists), 60 postdoctoral scholars, 56 graduate students and 49 staff. The Department has a dedicated team of Research Administrators who are responsible for providing high-level financial analyses and management to a defined group of faculty for their portfolio of sponsored awards. The RA serves as the faculty’s single point of contact for research financial issues and ensures that faculty are provided with high quality, efficient, responsive, and responsible post-award research administration services.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Ability to interpret policy for others.
  • Ability to perform highly complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Ability to manage high volume and complex transactions.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
  • Maintains knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply sponsor, institutional and departmental policies. Knowledge of current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
  • Demonstrated advanced competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of program administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous working experience in an academic environment
  • Full knowledge of Federal Acquisition Regulation, Code of Federal Regulations, sponsor-specific policies, intellectual property policy, conflict of interest requirements, publication rights, application of indirect cost rates and other complex concepts in research administration.
  • Experience with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements.
