In the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University, we research and teach how the collective behavior of molecules and cells forms the basis of life. The Dulac Lab, which focuses on molecular, genetic and optical techniques to explore the molecular and neuronal basis of innate social behaviors in the mouse, has an opening for Research Assistant I. This position will include technical support and experimental work for projects involving full neuronal reconstruction of images acquired via electron microscopy and molecular characterization of multiple neuronal circuits involved in social behaviors. The successful candidate will perform tasks related to the research project independently while under the guidance and mentorship of the supervisor.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to provide comprehensive technical support and experimental work for projects involving correlated light and electron microscopy, as well as molecular characterization of neuronal circuits. The projects in our group will provide the opportunity to gain experience with multiple, interdisciplinary techniques, including electron microscopy, mouse behavioral assays, fluorescent microscopy, and transcriptomics. As this work exists at the interface of molecular biology, electron and optical microscopy, and neuroscience, applicants with a diverse background in training and education will be considered. The primary responsibilities of this position are as follows:

• Assist with experimental design, establishing new protocols, and setting up lab space and equipment.
• Perform experiments involving the harvesting and preservation of mouse tissue, thin tissue section slicing, and RNA/protein detection.
• Perform experiments involving processing of samples for electron microscopy, including tissue slicing, fluorescent confocal microscopy, silicon wafer processing, and image acquisition.
• Perform annotation of acquired electron microscopy images by tracing continuous neuronal processes.
• Perform DNA extraction and PCR from isolated mouse tissue to determine animal genotype.
• Collect and record data from experiments; process, organize, and summarize data
• Occasionally instruct others in basic laboratory techniques.
• The successful candidate will perform tasks related to the research project independently while under the guidance and mentorship of the supervisor.

College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.

• B.S./B.A. degree in biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field.
• Background training and knowledge of molecular biology and/or neuroscience.
• Experience in neuroscience and/or microscopy is preferred
• Basic knowledge of general laboratory practices and procedures is required.
• At least one year of laboratory research experience is strongly preferred.
• Hands on experience with rodents is preferred.
• Knowledge of basic computer technologies, including specific software applications such as Windows system, MATLAB, and Python.
• Strong interpersonal skills, in addition to the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Must be well-organized with attention to detail, both experimentally and with communication.
• Must be self-motivated with excellent time-management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

This position does not offer hybrid remote/in person work flexibility. There is an expectation that employees be able to work in person in Cambridge, MA.
