The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science of the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate II to work as a Fisheries Technician for the Southeast Fishery-Independent Survey (SEFIS) in Beaufort, North Carolina.
The successful applicant will be a member of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC), as part of the Atlantic and Caribbean Reef Fish Branch. Research in this position is focused on laboratory and field assistance to carry out SEFIS, a large-scale reef fish survey program that samples reef fish using chevron traps and video cameras along the Atlantic coast between North Carolina and Florida each year. Research will focus on assessing the relative abundance, distribution, and habitats of various reef fish species in the region. Successful applicant’s primary duties will include: (1) identifying and counting reef fish on videos collected by SEFIS using standardized protocols, (2) participating in multiple (> 4) extended (> 10-day) research cruises each year as field party chief, watch leader, or watch stander, (3) extracting biological samples from fish captured during research surveys, including otoliths, reproductive tissues, and fin clips for genetic analyses, and (4) entering and editing cruise- and research-related data.
Department Specific Functions:
- Identifying and counting fish of various species using standardized video reading protocols
- Participate in multiple (> 4) extended (> 10-day) research cruises each year as field party chief, watch leader, or watch stander, sometimes involving travel via government vehicles
- Extract biological samples from fish captured during research surveys, including otoliths, reproductive tissues, and fin clips for genetic analyses
- Enter and edit cruise- and research-related data
- Loading and unloading sampling gear from research vessels
- Work on several projects simultaneously and set priorities to achieve project goals and deadlines.
- Write reports and present findings in scientific settings including in peer-reviewed publications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- The successful applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Science, Oceanography, Fisheries and Wildlife, or a related field, and at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in fisheries science or marine biology. Higher education levels are also eligible.
- Demonstrated experience must include identifying and counting reef fishes on underwater videos using standardized video reading protocols
- Expert-level identification abilities of reef fish from the southeast United States
- Substantial experience with offshore research cruises, serving as field party chief, watch leader, or watch stander; leadership experience on research cruises is preferred.
- Experience with video reading software (e.g., PowerDirector) and Microsoft Access preferred
- Ability to lift heavy objects (> 50 lbs) for cruise loading and unloading
- Ability to work 12-hour days while on research cruises in difficult conditions
- The ideal person will have excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills, strong attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to plan daily duties
- Excellent oral and written communication skills will be helpful to communicate with a diverse group of people in collaborative projects.
