JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant to the Office of Student Life will work closely with the Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students and the Campus Activities Coordinator to provide support as well as manage special projects for the Department. Residence Directors are responsible for providing overall management and leadership in residential buildings. Principal responsibilities include staff supervision and development, residential education, community development, crisis management, administration and building management, student discipline, and other departmental/college-wide responsibilities. Because Residence Directors are the primary professional staff members available in the residence halls for student contact, evening and weekend time with residential students is required. This is a full-time position. A private apartment within one of the residence halls is provided.
JOB DUTIES:
- Participate in Student Life staff meetings, housing meetings, retention meetings and other key College-wide committees
- Work with Student Life staff to provide quality customer-oriented services
- Coordinate student transportation (e.g., semester beginning and ending shuttles)
- Coordinates with Community Care of West Virginia for required student medical documentation
- Coordinate residence hall facility usage for summer camps and conferences (e.g., keys, floor charts, Student Life programming, etc.)
- Assist in preparation and coordination of campus events, activities, and Residence Life programming
- General clerical office duties
- Participate in the on-call rotation
- Maintain a customer-oriented approach to residence life services consistent with the culture and philosophy of the Office of Student Life
- Implement a comprehensive residence life program
- Collaborate with Assistant Dean of Students to manage building access and the opening and closing of the residence halls
- Report all incidents that occur in their building(s)
- Report and seek to resolve all housing facility issues
- Conduct regular building walk-throughs and monitor for health and safety concerns
- Report and document damage assessment
- Communicate regularly with Housekeeping, Physical Plant and the Office of Public Safety to assure residential facilities are maintained at optimum levels
- Coordinate and supervise residence hall activity programs that support student leadership, engagement, service learning, outdoor activities, academic endeavors, and community building
- Recruit, supervise, train, and evaluate resident assistants
- Provide leadership in preventing, responding to, and managing residential crisis situations
- Provide student conflict resolutions as needed (e.g., roommate disagreements, etc.)
- Serve as an information resource for residence life
- Prepare, analyze, and track budget for assigned residence hall
- Participates in Student Life meetings and other College-wide committees as directed by the Dean of Students
- To remain on campus and assume additional responsibilities during the following events and weekends and to remain on campus until the residence halls officially close prior to each vacation period. These periods may include Resident Assistant Training Week, Orientation/Opening Weekend, Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, Easter Break, Déjà vu, Commencement, and any other weekends or events as necessary.
PREREQUISITES/EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Student Affairs, Business, Counseling, Communication or related field
SKILLS: Leadership and management; documentation, confidentiality, collaboration; managing and responding to crisis situations, guiding students and support staff, knowledge of student development; experience or knowledge of residential educational best practices; strong oral and written communication; knowledge of housing accommodations; pass a background check
Physical Requirements: Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Typically requires sitting, standing, bending, keying, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Required to work regular evenings and weekends. Required to travel from building to building frequently.
