The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a senior-level Safety Officer 3 (SO3) in Lacey, WA. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring WSDOT's compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, laws, codes, and other nationally recognized good safety practices. The Safety Officer will oversee the delivery of various protection programs and work with all levels of staff to identify and implement safety improvements. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Safety Officer 3 (SO3) will:
  • Assist the Regional Safety Manager with the management of all administrative components of program such as budget, vendor selection, Leading Indicator (Rewards) Program, mandatory (state/federal) records management and reporting, identifying trends, and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Provide, instruct, and organize safety related adult education courses to regional staff as assigned by the safety manager.
  • Conduct assessments, perform tasks, and provide consultation on ergonomics/equipment usage and selection to assure human factor engineering is best suited to the employee.
  • Oversee the delivery of Regional Protection Programs (Respiratory, Confined Space, Lead Exposure, Blood Born Pathogen) and work with managers and employees to identify and implement safety improvements.
  • Conduct surveillance tasks (i.e., indoor air quality, lead, noise dosimetry) and serve as a regional expert for testing and exposure mitigations efforts to meet regulatory compliance.
  • Determine compliance with WAC, RCW, Fire and Life Safety Codes are being adhered to and address gaps in protocol as warranted.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or closely related field.
    OR
    Associates degree in Occupational Safety or closely related field and two (2) years of work experience as a safety professional.
    OR
    High School Diploma or GED equivalent and four (4) years of work experience as a safety professional performing duties related to safety and health program administration, safety and health education and training for adults, accident investigation and root cause analysis, work zone and/or facility inspection, and OSHA/WSHA/RCW/WAC compliance regulations.
  • Ability to travel regularly around the region and state to complete essential job functions.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • A bachelor's degree in in occupational health and safety, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education, or allied field.
  • Three (3) years of work experience as a safety professional.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
