Position Summary:

As a Scholar Coach, you’ll serve at a school with high academic needs and be embedded in a K-3 classroom. You’ll partner with a licensed teacher to promote scholastic engagement and help students become better readers. Every day, you’ll meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide extra practice and build skills.

With specialized training and on-site coaching, we’ll prepare you to help kids succeed. Students make the most progress when you are there, so Scholar Coaches serve eight hours a day, Monday-Friday and are needed for the whole school year. We are currently recruiting Scholar Coaches for the 2022-23 school year, and have options to begin in August, October or January.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with the Total Learning Classroom Initiative of Reading Corps. The initiative focuses on supporting schools with high academic needs. Together, we’re on a mission because kids who read have the power to succeed!

What to Expect:
  • Use proven strategies to help students build their skills, confidence and engagement.
  • Collaborate with coaches to monitor student progress and see what’s working.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software.
  • Commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness.
Perks Package:

Give your time as a Scholar Coach and receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 35 or 25 hours per week (when school is in session).

35 hours/week

  • A stipend of $1,030 paid every 2 weeks
    • $21,630 total for 1,200 hours of service starting August 2022
    • $16,480 total for 900 hours of service starting October 2022
    • $11,330 total for 675 hours of service starting January 2023
  • Up to $4,546 for tuition or student loans*
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
  • Individual health insurance — Monthly premium 100% covered
  • Child care assistance — Based on family size and income


25 hours/week

  • A stipend of $780 paid every 2 weeks
  • $8,580 total for 450 hours of service starting January 2023
  • Up to $1,718 for tuition or student loans*
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
  • The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child, or stepchild.
What it Takes:

Reading Corps takes ordinary people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to take action for kids – and meet the following minimum qualifications. By the time they begin their service, our tutors are:

  • Dependable and have a history of good attendance
  • Able to understand and follow instructions
  • Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students
  • Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
  • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
  • Able to successfully complete a background check
  • Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
