ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY – Job Summary
The Berry Flavor Center Technician will support analytical chemistry, and post-harvest phenotyping platforms for fruit flavor and texture for eating quality research within Driscoll’s Global R&D. This role will work together with a small creative team to support research activities including sample processing, and data acquisition within the Berry Flavor Center group and will help ensure a steady lab output. The R&D Technician will execute on project goals and timelines primarily within the Post-harvest and Chemistry groups that aid Driscoll’s in accomplishing our flavor modeling mission.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Support sample receipt, inventory, and progression through routine assays using digital platforms.
Perform sample preparation of fruit and juice for analysis on analytical instrumentation.
Support operation and maintenance of equipment/instrumentation for routine assays.
Support instrument data processing, and data analysis.
Ability to successfully follow and perform pre-established laboratory SOP’s and protocols.
Keep a stocked, clean, and orderly laboratory to promote safety and productivity.
Keep an up-to-date digital lab notebook.
Responsible for working in collaboration with Post-harvest and Chemistry Departments to accomplish planned flavor data collection.
Ensure Driscoll’s confidential and proprietary information and materials.
Represents Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like professional manner in all interactions with growers, co-workers, suppliers, customers and the business community at large.
Contributes to a collaborative spirit to support people effectiveness, engaged employees, and enabling others to perform.
Other duties as assigned.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- GED or high school diploma required.
- 1-2 year’s experience in Research and Development
Areas of experience:
- 1-2 year’s experience in Analytical Chemistry
- 1-2 years’ experience in Food Chemistry
- 1-2 years of experience with postharvest tools used to measure fruit quality.
- Experience with data collection and using spreadsheet applications.
- Ability to work with dynamic and diverse team of researchers and scientists.
- Be reliable, honest, and trustworthy.
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Preferred (other) Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, food science, nutrition, or a similar discipline preferred.
- Prior coursework in chemistry and biology.
- Familiar with chemical chromatography and mass spectrometry data systems.
- Familiar with texture analyzer data systems.
- Prior research lab experience.
- Driver’s license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program.
